Meet Robert Lane | Founder, lead guitarist, weakest link – honeybunches Of DEATH

We had the good fortune of connecting with Robert Lane and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Robert, what are you inspired by?
Apparently, always being interesting and insightful! 😂 honeybunches Of DEATH loves unconventional thinking and challenging authority. We are heavily inspired by the comedy musicians of the past and present. We are inspired by the challenge of being completely stupid and thoroughly brilliant at the same time.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
While we spend most of our time destroying labels, we do like to try and sum it up with Comedy Groove Metal. We wear crazy, loud costumes. Our current show is as pseudo professional wrestlers. We have a ton of color and flash which is a little different for bands in our style. As the wonderful Mandy Michelle Photography put it, “neon grit, theatrical chaos, no apologies.” We sing about things that are ridiculous, funny, absurd, gross, sexual, and educational. Sometimes all at once. We want the world to know that you are unlikely to see anything exactly like us. Come while you can because I’m 54 already, no telling how much longer I’ve got 🙃 The biggest lesson, especially where art is concerned is GO FOR IT! You’re going to be terrible at first but it does get better! It’s been very hard to get here, but the struggles have brought us closer and pushed us forward. We overcome by clear and open communication about everything that we think and feel towards ourselves and the band. I believe it results in a 100% authentic product which we love to put on display. We’re fresh off our SOLD OUT show at the Mercury Cafe with Psychostick! Please come see for yourself at HQ on August 20th, where we will be opening for the one and only Metalachi! (Metal + Mariachi).

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a Denver native, 54, so I’ve seen and done a lot in this state/city. I would have to base it on the particular friend and their interests. I really love the mountains and the mining towns relating to the gold rush, so if you can handle winding roads, the mountains here are stunning. Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park should be on everyone’s bucket list. Downtown Denver has lots of interesting sites, the Museum of Natural History, the Denver Art Museum, the Buckhorn exchange. I’d take them to see as many of the local bands as possible if they were into it. They would of course be required to see honeybunches Of DEATH. And, if you want to get into trouble, I hear the jails are nice…

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents have always been supportive of my lunacy. I was not a great son and did not appreciate their resilience. I really have to thank my brothers in the band. honeybunches Of DEATH would just be a good idea in a notebook if I didn’t have the their steadfast belief in our mission. I want to thank the promoters in the Denver scene who book us even after meeting us; Swinging Noose Productions, Ground Zero, Sunshine Studios Live, Bandwagon Presents, and 4130 Management! The incredible photographers we get to do our shows! All of the great bands we get to play with, all of the venues that support live original music, and THE FANS!
