We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Goss and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matt, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The local art scene was a bit conservative and I found it hard to display my classical nudes, let alone any more provocative pieces, anywhere other than a tattoo shop.
After hosting a few pop up art shows I had the opportunity to give a brick and mortar gallery a shot.
I wanted to focus on creating an uncensored and commission-free gallery.
That was over 10 years ago.
I’m probably more stubborn than smart. (In all honesty)

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I created an uncensored and commission free art gallery.
This is a space where artists pay a monthly due, that goes directly to paying the lease on building, then they display their art and the gallery does not accept a commission on art sales.

The theory is that even a small commission can kill the chances of a sale. At uncanny, artists price their art at what they think it’s worth, without the extra 20%-50% commission that sone galleries charge.
They sell more art, get more art into homes, and they can pay their dues easier as well.

On top of being commission-free we also are an uncensored gallery. We give our artists complete artists freedom to express themselves.

This might sound ridiculous, but some gallery spaces can be a bit more reserved or conservative and we exists to fill the void for unconventional and provocative art in grand junction

In 2022 we obtained our nonprofit status, and we are the only 501 c(6) art gallery in Colorado.

We have hosted over 120 first Friday art shows and welcome everybody to stop by for one!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Art on main.
We have an amazing collection of public art sculptures all along our Main Street, from 1st street to 7th street.
It is a collection of permanent pieces and well as about a couple dozen that get rotated out every year.
Downtown also is recognized as a colorado creative district, with lots of galleries, public murals and special events like the annual downtown art fest and farmers markets.

Palisade is a great place to spend a full day as well. Touring the orchards is relaxing but the best in autum.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate it to all the members of Uncanny Valley Art Gallery.
At Uncanny Valley Art Gallery, we have had so many artists over the years contribute to the dream of an uncensored and commission-free gallery that I could fill the rest of this article listing them.
Our local artists community is thriving with so many diverse talents and to be an apart of it and help show and sell their art is amazing.
Our gallery would not exist without their amazing efforts to make our gallery so unique.
