Meet Alison Ferguson | Insurance Agent

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alison Ferguson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alison, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Being in Sales, I believe, the best thing you can do is look at your work as your own business. My parent company, Liberty Mutual, spun us off and made us independent agents in 2022. Our agency is called Comparion and we are now one of the largest independent agencies in the country. I have my own book of business, and the freedom to create new referral partners, work events, create a social media presence. Insurance is governed my State Laws and our actions have to be compliant. There is a lot of regulation in insurance which means, we don’t negotiate rates or have the ability to really change rates. They are what they are.
I came into the insurance industry quite late in life, my kids were already in high school. I had stayed home for the better part of 12 years making parenting my main priority. But I really missed working. I have always loved the independence of sales.
I believe my success can be attributed to working hard, never giving up and availing myself of all of the opportunities my company provided to aid in our success.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started with Liberty Mutual in 2015. I came into insurance later in life, having raised 3 kids as a stay at home mom. When I re-entered the workforce, I found it took some time to find the right fit. I have found Sales to be very “situational” meaning there are some situations that are just not ever going to work. In my opinion, it is best to just walk away from those and find a situation where you can be successful. Liberty Mutual hires excellent managers and fosters a culture of trust, professional development and always looking for the best qualities in people. I have always appreciated that no matter how difficult and challenging the time, my manager had my back and was there to help me. I love that attitude and have built a large book of business over the past 10 years.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When we have guests visiting from out of town we harken back to the time when we first discovered Colorado back in the early 90s, remembering what we loved about Colorado. The first thing we would do is take them to the mountains for the day, one of the towns, say Breckinridge or Vail or Estes Park. We would then take them to one of the more authentic Mexican restaurants in town to enjoy what we feel is Colorado’s cuisine specialty: Mexican food. We have in the past, taken our friends to the Broadmoor, the Olympic training village, The Airforce Academy, up the Cog rail to Pikes Peak. Exploring Denver is also a must. There are some great walking tours of our city. It is also nice to combine one of the sporting events, as this area has great sports teams. Last year we had friends visiting from out of town, and we enjoyed a day watching the BMW golf tournament at the lovely Castle Pines golf club. Taking in a Rockies game is fun, if for no other reason than sitting under the stars at a beautiful Coors field. There is so much to do in the great city.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My biggest shoutout would be to the managers I’ve had while at Liberty Mutual/Comparion who have always believed in me, my work ethic and what I have to bring to the table.
