We had the good fortune of connecting with Katy Betz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katy, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
My art studio, Creating Space for Imagination, helps the community by fostering creativity, emotional expression, and a sense of wonder. Through book illustration, teaching, workshops, coaching, and mentorship, I help people see beauty in everyday life, develop their creative voices, and connect with themselves and others. By inspiring imagination and self-expression, my work supports spiritual well-being, builds confidence, and encourages a more mindful, connected, and compassionate world.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My work is rooted in helping people notice beauty in ordinary life and reconnect with imagination. I move between illustration and education, and what ties everything together is a focus on emotional connection and learning how to see more deeply.

What I am most proud of is creating a space where people feel invited to explore their own creativity without pressure or comparison. Teaching has been a major part of my path, and it has shaped how I approach my own studio practice as much as how I support others.

Getting here professionally took time and persistence. There were seasons of uncertainty where I had to keep going without clear external validation, and I learned to trust the direction of my work even when progress felt slow. Staying consistent, refining my voice, and continuing to show up for both making and teaching were key to moving forward.

Along the way I learned that clarity often comes through action rather than waiting for certainty, and that creative work deepens when it is shared with others.

More than anything, I want people to know that my work exists to awaken curiosity, and cultivate a renewed sense of wonder in everyday experience.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am much more of a mountain person than a city person. As an avid hiker, I have discovered a few favorite places to enjoy a meal after a long day outdoors.

One that I always come back to is Toss Wood Fired Eatery in Rollinsville. It is the kind of place that feels especially rewarding after time spent on the trail.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a special thank you to my family, who have always believed in me and supported my journey. So many people have poured into my life and artistic growth over the years that it would be impossible to name them all.

A particularly heartfelt thank you goes to illustrator Margie Kiddy, who has been a true mother in the arts. She has covered me in prayer, offered a listening ear during difficult seasons, and provided unwavering encouragement every step of the way.
