We had the good fortune of connecting with Sage Scorse and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sage, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thoughts for starting a small business were virtually nonexistent before we started The Hesed Project. I have imagined, since marketing struck a chord with me, that I would simply work for a big company and be another day to day employee. To me, the monotony of an office job sounds nice. When I was asked to join the Hesed Project by co-founder and Director of Operations, Hannah Lim, I was confused at the excitement that I felt. I thought I had a plan. The excitement of starting a small business that would be God-centered won over. I had to be a part of this. This is what I wanted, to market and communicate for a business and express their passions and ideas.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a full-time student, starting a business seemed daunting. For me, grades and self-care are important. I didn’t know if I would be able to add another time-consuming factor into my life. But, the excitement of my friends, and soon to be business partners, was too much to pass up. These young women were excited and proud to start this business. And they wanted me to be a part of this. Their excitement was intoxicating- I wanted to help them achieve this new endeavor. I started working at a young age. My family has a strong work ethic. When I was 12 I was babysitting and dog walking. By the time I was 14, I started working at the town library and worked there for five years as a Library Assistant. During the time I worked at the library, I also worked a seasonal job at a family-owned business, where I was promoted to supervisor in my third season. These amazing experiences helped shape me into the motivated and hardworking person I am today. It taught me to balance work, school, sports, church, family, and alone time. When I got to college, after the expected bumps of being in a different state and fully alone- I was able to sort out my schedule, my aspirations, and where I saw myself in four years. Where I am today is thanks to the past eight years in which I strove to be a better me so that I could have a successful future.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Greeley, Colorado… first things first, I am from New England and there are some old, rough areas in which Greeley can’t compare. However, I have come to enjoy Greeley because of all of the businesses that are springing up- minus the smell of the local beef processing plant, of course. There are many different types of restaurants- from Japanese to Mexican, Indian, and Chinese. I would take someone to Daruma’s- a Japanese bistro that serves delicious udon noodle soup and sushi. Luna’s Tacos and Tequila is an artsy and relaxed restaurant that has an outdoor roof patio and great atmospherics. There are many coffee shops that support artists and hold church services on Sundays. Zoe’s Cafe is open until 12 am, which makes it an ideal study spot. Margie’s Cafe has an outdoor patio, great coffee and food, and an area for selling local art. Greeley has the largest model railroad museum in the country that people come from all over to see. However, my favorite spot in Greeley is the University of Northern Colorado campus. There are many grassy areas, trees, and benches where you can study and hang out.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, Jesus deserves all the recognition for this business. Without Him, I would not have a passion for business and art. Being able to center our business around Jesus is what made me so excited to be a part of it. Second, my parents were the ones that helped inspire and shape my passions to what they are today- I love art, business, and communications from my parents’ respect and love of these areas. My business partner, Hannah Lim, has also inspired and pushed me to work harder and smarter for The Hesed Project.
