We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Rachel Kapustka and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Rachel, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I was 33 years old when my husband and I started our business. We were young and we really had no other responsibilities than getting our practice going. Our life was 100% focused on connecting with people in the community, volunteering, making friends, taking care of clients, building networking groups with colleagues and growing. We married 2 years into having our business and 6 months later we were pregnant. This experience allowed us to connect with more parents and people who were family planning. At the same time, as a female professional, I felt pulled in multiple directions but mostly between the love and passion of my profession and with my life’s greatest purpose of being a mom. It was an easy decision to prioritize motherhood and it was uncomfortable to take a back seat in our business and as a chiropractor. The balance slowly worked itself out in the first few years of motherhood and we are blessed to have a family practice so I could enjoy serving the community while being able to mostly focus on being a mom. Another change to that balance came when it was time for our son to start school and then I could work more again. Knowing that my son didn’t need me in the same way and school could support his growth was kind of painful in my heart. It took some time to allow myself to lean into working more and being with my son took less time in my day. I think being a parent and an entrepreneur is bitter sweet and is less about balance and more about expansion and contraction.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As a chiropractor, I am always at risk of sounding to foo foo and I’ll do it anyway! We are functional correction practitioners which means we want to address the underlying cause to why our clients are seeking support. We are seeing them as whole beings not just a physical body part. We acknowledge that our practice members are spiritual, mental, emotional and physical beings with a life story that has left residual impact on the core of who they are in the world. We want people to not only feel good, we also want them to fully experience life and fully express who they are meant to be in a connected way. We had a thriving family practice in Durango, Co for 10 years and we relocated to Denver 5 years ago for our son. Starting from scratch the first time was challenging yet doing it a second time was humbling. Persistent consistent energy toward our goals is helping us overcome the challenges. Being adaptable and practicing living with trust and faith have been the lessons. I have found that regular and effective communication with the support of coaches has been and continues to be essential. I would also say that it takes a community to have a successful business so networking and reaching out to other entrepreneur’s has been key. We have been clients of chiropractic since our early teens as athletes, we both worked for chiropractors for mentorship and through our continuous personal growth work are able to show up for our community in ways that people wouldn’t think a chiropractor could do. We are a “special needs” family so we know what it’s like to struggle with health challenges and the adversities of life first hand. We have exceptional tools to support growth and healing as well as loads of empathy and compassion for our community and clients.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, I have had dear friends come to visit! We have enjoyed staying at The Art Hotel, Hotel Monaco, Teatro Hotel and The Brown Palace. They are all beautiful places to stay, the service was amazing and the rooms were gorgeous! The Brown Palace around Christmas is stunning! Each of my friends have different likes and interests. I have one friend that always wants to eat at True Food which, is an all time favorite in our family throughout the year. For entertainment, Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox is a must. They have great food, great seating, a fun dance floor and incredible artists! We have also enjoyed Spa days at MeSpa and great dining at T-Street Roadhouse in Belmar. Dance parties to our favorite 80’s songs in the hotel room are guaranteed. Breakfast is always of high priority and some friend’s favorites are Sassafras, Snooze, Denver Biscuit Co and French Press. There are so many hot spots in Denver, it’s difficult to name them all and for sure when friends come into town, we enjoy exploring new places with them!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout list is long! Yet first and foremost I shoutout my husband, Dr. Nick Kapustka. He is my life partner and business partner. There is no such thing as 50/50 in responsibilities of our home and business yet if I had to guess, it’s close to 50/50 except for when I went through a kidney transplant 3 years ago and a lot of our life’s responsibilities fell on his shoulders. He’s a champ and without him, I simply would not be alive. On that note, I shout out my life saving kidney donor, Korrie. She very generously donated her kidney to me before knowing me. Divine intervention. My mentors always deserve mentioning and they are Dr. Philip Peterson, Dr. Bart Precourt, Dr. Arno Burnier, Dr. John Watkins and Dr. Marc Swerdlick. With their mentorship, wisdom and expertise, I am able to be the healthcare provider that I am to serve our community at the highest level. For me, what makes my world continue to flow with grace are my girlfriends, They are like my sisters from another mother. My family is amazing and my sisters get me through everyday with love and laughter! Lastly, I would like to shoutout my son, Noah. He is my greatest teacher and I his greatest fan. He eats adversity for lunch with a big smile on his face! #magicman
