We had the good fortune of connecting with Madeleine Mathis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Madeleine, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
From my earliest childhood experiences of rolling out Potica dough with my mom (a sweet Yogoslavian bread filled with yumminess) to the first time I perfected a french macaron, baking has always been my favorite hobby. I became obsessed with the science behind baking and understanding the effects of each ingredient. I also loved how art could be transferred to a cake or sugar cookie. I also loved how art could be transferred to a cake or sugar cookie. My childhood dream job was to be a pastry chef. At age 16, I started working in local bakeries which then led me to an opportunity at Cherry Hills Country Club. At Cherry Hills, I was fortunate to work with a master pastry chef and absorb knowledge from a true professional. I was promoted to Assistant Pastry Chef and was delighted to be a part of the esteemed BMW Championship. Although my hands were always in the kitchen, I eventually pursued a degree in mathematics and began a career in wealth management. In 2017, I decided to pursue my passions on my sweetest adventure yet: Sweet Madeleine’s Bakery in Denver.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Sweet Madeleine’s Bakery is a custom order bakery (no storefront yet) and a perfect way to celebrate every special occasion! Some of my most popular creations are decorated sugar “ART” cookies, mini dessert assortments, french macaron ice cream sandwiches, and custom cakes. In addition, I now also offer classes for all ages (decorated sugar cookie classes, cake decorating classes, and french macaron classes). What sets me apart? Just take a peek for yourself on my Instagram or website. Let me tell you…sugar is not going out of style… Sweet Madeleine’s Bakery is worth treating yourself!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love absolutely love when my friends visit and in an ideal world this would be my itenerary: I would take them for some coffee and an acai bowl, then to an outdoor activity (stairs at Red Rocks, alpine slide, white water rafting, Rockies game), then to Rino for some brewery hopping, then to get some chow (Gaetanos, Senor Bear, El Camino), then finish up with some Dang Soft Serve ice cream…..and then some more bar hopping.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom. She has been there from the start – broadcasting my business to all her friends, picking up last minute baking supplies for an order, individually packaging 200 sugar cookies, and being my sidekick for wedding cake delivery/decorating. She’s the absolute best.
