We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsea T. Avery and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chelsea, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
It can be easy to seek external validation of success – like money, followers, units sold, size or number of houses, etc. and part of it is because they can be easier to quantify than other things. For me, defining success has to do more with my internal state and how I FEEl as I go about my business and life. I was first introduced to this by Danielle LaPorte. She dubs these ‘core desired feelings’ and it’s actually the feeling we seek when going after and eventually accomplishing goals.
Success for me feels like ease and excitement for the clients I work with and the workshops I facilitate. It feels like the freedom to function from a place of abundance versus scarcity. I’m realizing more and more how vital my internal sense of peace is when it comes to setting and seeking goals.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My husband and I actually own our business together – we like to think of ourselves as the communication consulting firm. I coached him to become the Youngest World Champion of Public Speaking in History and that is what gave us the final push to go all in together. He focuses mainly on keynotes and trainings all around communication in the professional space and my main focus is on workshops and private coaching around personal communication. We currently overlap when we run couples workshops together!
Running our business, especially since we are partners in every sense of the word, is not always easy. We have different energy levels and varying ideas of where to spend our resources but the key thing that holds it and us together is our ability to communicate. When I think about issues that occur across any industry or any relationship for that matter – most of them come down to communication. Many of us are operating under the impression that we know how to communicate but the truth is, it’s a learned skill that is always in practice.
What I want the world to know about us and our story is that we remain dedicated to each other and to helping others learn new ways to communicate and express feelings and opinions in a productive way.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would hit up Linger because I love the story of it! Growing up here, I distinctly remember driving past Olingers Cemetery. It’s a unique use of space now – plus the view from the deck is excellent! We would also go visit Estes Park for the day because the views of Mother Nature are glorious. I have two young children so we would also be asking other people where cool spots to drink margaritas are located since my bed time is usually at 9pm sharp.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My first shoutout goes to my own coach, mentor and now friend Demi McConkie. She showed me how the mind works and in turn has helped me completely rethink and reshape how the whole world works! May sound crazy but it’s true! It really is an inside out job.
Also Entrepreneurs’ Organization of Colorado – the Accelerator’s Program has been such an important part of my growth as an entrepreneur and business owner. My life before this was as a social worker so there were many layers to work through there and this organization gives tangible tools and strategies to accelerate growth both as a person as well as our businesses.
