Meet Gina Gibbons | DJ

We had the good fortune of connecting with Gina Gibbons and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gina, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Playing.What.I.Love.

It’s a very common idea, yet within the general umbrella of ‘doing what you love’ there will be many temptations to stray from your clear truth. Flexibility is important but you can also create too much space in which to wander away from your original vision and focus. For me as a DJ, I’ve been very clear from day one as to what type of music I want to play. I only want to share music that brings me alive. This means, I have to turn down opportunities that don’t fully align with my exact niches. This can be scary and counterintuitive, especially at the beginning, yet the reward of discernment and authenticity is priceless.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In a world of endless change, one thing has remained constant and that is my deep and passionate love for music. It took me years to find DJing because when I first tried it (before I was even legally allowed to enter a dance club), I didn’t totally love it. As I continued to explore my relationship with music and my own expression of it, DJing felt so natural when I tried it again over a decade later.

The tech side was my greatest challenge, as I am basically self-taught and there were moments when I really didn’t think I was going to break past the frustration and get to the fun part. Yet dedication to one’s craft is ultimately the most liberating thing we can do because it takes practice to be spontaneous and reach that infamous state of flow we all seek in various ways.

Music has brought me such freedom within myself and the world around me and that is the experience I hope to craft for others through my sets. Sound has the ability to alter our perception of time and creating cohesive, collective experiences that uplifts others feels more important than ever before.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d start by taking them into the mountains, find a beautiful spot along the river somewhere north of Boulder and just be. We’d wander, look at wildflowers and trees and have tea. For lunch, we would head to Roost and have some delicious farm to table fare. On our way into Boulder, we would stop by Elk Run Farm and pick up some home-brewed Kombucha tonics with local, medicinal plants. We’d drive along the foothills and stop at Trident for a little reading break. Then, we’d walk to Apocalypse and find some killer secondhand clothing for a night out in Denver. Dinner would be at Uncle where we’d fuel up for the night with some delicious ramen. We’d catch a Below Radar music event featuring fantastic DJs from all over the world. We’d dance with others and step outside to gaze towards the sun setting over the mountains.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to Marissa and Nick from Elk Run Farm have supported and provided space for me to explore my creative edges by having events on their land. I had (what I thought) was a total trainwreck as well as one of my best sets and they’ve been endlessly supportive on both occasions.
