We had the good fortune of connecting with Sam Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sam, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
I don’t know if it qualifies as a quote or affirmation but there is one phrase that I repeat to myself several times a day, “Question thoughts, not actions.”

It’s a phrase that I came up with to help me combat some of the negative thought patterns I would experience during my entrepreneurial journey. It’s so easy to find myself replaying a scenario over and over again stuck on figuring out what I did wrong which would often derail me for a significant period of time.

Repeating this phrase allows me to skip the replay and instead get curious about the thoughts I have about whatever just occurred. It has helped me time and again to accept whatever happened and extract the meaning that will help me to keep moving forward.

Let’s talk work? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I spent the majority of my life forcing myself to fit into a box so I looked successful from an external point of view.  I studied Finance in college and went to work for prestigious companies that looked good on my resume but always felt wrong.  It wasn’t until 3 years ago, when the idea for Hazlo came to me on the streets of Manhattan, that I saw that creating my own path was an option.

It took so long for me to take the leap because I believed I wasn’t good enough to create a brand.  The story I told myself is that I wasn’t smart enough, creative enough, or courageous enough to make this happen.  The past 3 years have been a journey filled with countless low moments, crazy amounts of self-doubt, and frustration at every turn.  It has also been the most fun I’ve had in my life.
This journey has taught me that the only thing that stood between me and my dreams were the stories I would tell myself.  The moment I started questioning them and doing things anyway was the moment that everything started falling into place.  Choosing to do that is terrifying, extremely difficult, and worth it every time.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The trip would be broken down into two parts with half spent in Denver and the other half exploring the rest of Colorado.

Colorado Itinerary:
Camping near Buena Vista
A show at Red Rocks
Hike Boulder Flatirons
A night out in Breckenridge at The Gold Pan Saloon

Denver Itinerary:
Picnic at Cheesman Park
Dinner at Dimestore Delibar
Drinks at Ironton Distillery
Late-night dancing at Meadowlark

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I feel like I’m reciting every award show recipient speech when I say that there are too many people to thank for this. The obvious ones are my parents, family, and close friends who have not only supported me but encouraged me to take on the challenge of building a brand.

Beyond them, there are two other individuals who I know for certain played an instrumental role in getting to this point.

The first is Eden Laurin, the incredible mixologist and brains behind the Hazlo formula. I met her after a particularly difficult 6 month period of time where I was constantly hitting dead ends in my pursuit of bringing this product to life. If it weren’t for her agreeing to get coffee with me at the La Colombe in Wicker Park, listening to my entrepreneurial sob story of constant failure, and agreeing to help me by taking on the formulation project there would be no Hazlo.

Similarly, if it weren’t for my mentor Josh Band I would be where I am even though we still have never met in person. In May of 2020 after the Pandemic derailed my launch plans I told him about my decision to no longer pursue the business and transition into selling real estate. His response of, “so you’re telling me you’re quitting?” was exactly what I needed at that point to persevere and find myself here 14 months later.
