We had the good fortune of connecting with Jourdan Kovaly and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jourdan, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
When first meeting clients, I like to say I grew up in Real Estate. While that is not completely accurate, I have spent the better part of 18 years following my Dad around to open houses, showings, listing appointments, and closings. I was essentially a fly on the wall, watching my Dad be an extraordinary Realtor. Admittedly at the time, I thought it was achingly boring, and swore I would never go into real estate. A wonderful husband, three beautiful children and a degree in Education later, I received my real estate license in 2018 and am so glad I did. Turns out my Dad was right, year after year saying I would do so well in real estate, and most importantly I would find joy in it. Both of which proved to be true. The most significant lesson I learned and continue to learn in this business, is to not sweat the small stuff, and it is all small stuff. Real estate can be all consuming, stressful and seemingly catastrophic if you let it. I focus my energy on protecting my clients to the best of my abilities, caring for their interests as if they are my own, and building lasting relationships with incredible people. I am also so grateful to get to work with two of my favorite people, my Dad and my Sister who push me to be better and work harder everyday.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
They say on average people know 2 1/2 real estate agents. Not exactly sure where the half comes into play, but the point being that most people know several real estate agents. This means there are a lot of people in the business; I would say primarily because it is seemingly good, easy money. The truth is statistically, 10% of real estate agents do 90% of the business, making it a very challenging and competitive field. I started in real estate in 2018, and this year won the Rising Star Award for 5280 Magazine, and ranked #106 out of 21,572 Realtors in Denver. That puts me in the top 1% of Realtors in Denver according to the Five Star Professional publication. I attribute this success entirely to having a very knowledgable, engaged managing broker and team dedicated to me building my skill set, understanding and competency. I work as a team with my Dad, and Sister and it is what sets us apart. We are an intentionally small, boutique firm because we value experience over volume. We want to be the only realtors you ever use, as we like to put it we want to be your lifelong realtors. I would say that this business model has worked, because we don’t really market ourselves. Almost all of our business comes from referrals and repeat clients. I am most proud of that, I am proud of building a business that demonstrates my fundamental belief in helping others, education, and most importantly building relationships.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
That’s a tough question! If it was my best friend, I’ll go off of the assumption that they enjoy doing similar if not the same activities that I do. I will also stay within Metro Denver as Colorado is expansive, diverse, and there are endless interesting things to see and do. I could spend months showing all my favorite places in the state. I will itemize the itinerary for the sake of organization.
Monday-we would wake up, go to breakfast somewhere like snooze (pineapple pancakes!) and then do some thrift shopping in Denver. There are some great thrift stores in Colorado, and thrifting is my favorite hobby. There is a two story Goodwill off Broadway in Baker and it does not dissapoint! Afterwards, we would probably go to Postino, its wonderful. There are so many restaurants along that strip of Broadway that I enjoy, a couple of which have closed due to the pandemic unfortunately.
Tuesday- One of my favorite places to go is Wash Park to walk. On Tuesday, we would walk the park with my dog Freya and enjoy the expansive 161 acre park. If looking for great parks in Denver, I would also recommend City Park, Cheesman and walking around the Denver Botanic Gardens. The Denver Botanic gardens does guided tours and regular events, they are always fun and insightful. After, I would say we go to lunch at Watercourse, it is a vegetarian/vegan restaurant. I am vegetarian, and this is a classic Denver staple.
Wednesday- I know it is quintessential Colorado, but I really do enjoy hiking and beer. There are a couple hikes in or around Parker that are challenging but close to where I live. Casltewood Canyon State Park is in Franktown, so just South of Parker, and it’s a combination of challenging and gorgeous. In 2019, my husband did the Leadville 100, and as one of his pacers I did a lot of trail running and training here. For beers and food after the hike, I would recommend Great Divide.
Thursday- I have three children (8, 6, 4) we can’t exclude them. I would say on Thursday we spend the day at the park followed by lunch. We have a couple favorite parks, but honestly there are so many wonderful parks in Colorado. When the kids were little, having three kids felt very overwhelming in the beginning. At the time (2016), my husband was working nights at a freight company after getting out of The Marine Corps. I spent most of the time alone with the kids, and spent nights getting my real estate license. I was very overwhelmed at the time, and my trick to surviving was to keep busy. We would search parks in my phone, and bounce around to different parks for something fun and free to do. Our family favorites are Centennial Center, Deputy Zach Parrish Park, and the one on mainstreet in Parker is a recent fav because it’s close to Kilwins Chocolate Shop and Ice Cream. If you haven’t been, it’s delicious and makes for a great gift. For lunch, there’s a Thai place in Centennial that I order at least once a week, seriously it’s THAT good, it is called At Nine Thai.
Friday-The plans for Friday get a little tricky with the pandemic, they involve going to dinner, drinks and dancing on mainstreet Parker. For dinner, I really enjoy Black+Haus Tavern, Parker Garage or West Main Taproom + Grill. They all have great food, drinks and great patios to enjoy live music. For dancing, Tailgate has a really fun, lively atmosphere.
This concludes a week with me in Colorado!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wholeheartedly believe success is shared amongst the people who help push, guide, question and support you. For me, those people are my family. They are my mom, my dad, my sister, my husband and my three beautiful children. It would be difficult to easily choose just one, as they all deserve recognition. Each has shaped me in different ways, throughout the seasons of my life to get me to where I am. I also know that there is still so much to learn and growth to be made, and I am excited about the possibilities ahead.
