Meet Madison Meggison | Colorado Portrait Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Madison Meggison and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Madison, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was fourteen when I began taking photographs on my phone or by sneaking to use my mom’s point and shoot camera. Throughout the year my mom saved up money to buy me my own Nikon D3200 camera for Christmas, and I immediately started taking photos of anything and everyone around. This was the moment that changed everything because I went from taking photos on my iPhone to taking photos on a real camera. I began to fall in love with taking photos on a whole new level, and I was truly obsessed with the process of taking and editing photos. Slowly as I got better at the craft, I had friends and family reach out to have me take their photos. Then I began to hear from peers asking for my ‘pricing’. Receiving these questions allowed me to consider the idea of making money from my passion. From that point forward I decided that with continued practice and jumping into it, I could be a real photographer.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am currently in college, and I will be graduating in May of 22’ with my bachelor’s in Inclusive Elementary Education with an emphasis on special education, English language learners, and visual arts. To explain a little better, I am going to be a teacher who loves to work with students of all needs but also, I love art and wanted to be licensed in visual art education as an additional option. Teaching is such a challenging job and as I am currently in my student teaching as part of my degree. Working as a student-teacher presents a variety of challenges such as being; full-time teacher without pay, long hours, emotionally draining. Despite these hardships of becoming a teacher and being a teacher, I am completely in love with sharing my love of education with others. I am passionate about teaching little humans through and through, but something that always gets me through is picking up my camera and capturing the world around me.
Photography is my passion and I love capturing beautiful moments in people’s lives. My ‘brand’ Madi Rose Photography is a place where anyone, of any age, gender, or nongender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and ability. My passion for inclusion in education trickles into my passion for photography and I love working with ALL people.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When visiting Colorado there are so many things and places to go and do. As a native, I am still discovering and exploring all of the places that Colorado has to offer. Colorado has everything from small towns of less than 1000 people to cities of 700 thousand people and easy walks/hikes through the mountains to hikes only recommended to avid hikers. Colorado has a variety of beautiful natural spaces that should not be missed. My personal favorites are the ones that are easy to get to but allow you to forget about anything other than what you’re seeing in front of you. Garden of the Gods is beautiful, but a visitor does not need more than a day. North Cheyenne Canyon in Colorado Springs could be explored for hours on end, but if you’re not an avid hiker that may not be worth a day trip. A day trip that should be taken is a drive to Estes Park through Boulder. This drive is home to beautiful views and unique places to stop off. In Estes Park, you are against the Rocky Mountain National Park and have access to cute shops.
There are amazing cities that one could travel to in Colorado as well. We all know Denver because it is one of the biggest cities in the United States. In Denver, I highly recommend checking out my favorite bookstore The Tattered Cover, and pop into the record store across it, Twist and Shout, before heading out. I also recommend checking out the art district in Denver, RiNo. The art district is home to many restaurants, bars, and beautiful public art, such as murals and large sculptures. The city of Denver deserves to have a minimum of one full day to explore and experience the culture. Colorado Springs also deserves a minimum of one day because you get the big city feel with the mountains towering above. In Colorado Springs, you should not miss these amazing restaurants: Rasta Pasta for Jamaican Italian fusion, Burrowing Owl for fully vegan comfort food, and Heart of Jerusalem for amazing gyros. For a night out on the town, when getting drinks I recommend the bar Supernova that has a variety of arcade games to play while you enjoy your drinks, and the bar The Archives that gives speakeasy vibes with strong but delicious drinks.
Colorado has so many things to offer for any type of person. If you love to be out in nature we have stunning mountains, lakes, and scenic areas. If you love the city life we are home to one of the largest cities in the United States, Denver, and the city that keeps growing, Colorado Springs.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have so many support systems in my life but I want to recognize all of the people in my life who have supported my journey in becoming a “real photographer”.
