We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eric, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business is that I want to be able to share my passion for the natural beauty of precious and semi-precious stones while also providing a service that highlights said beauty in a timeless, wearable fashion. For me, wire art is just the beginning. In the future, customers and clients can look forward to original, handcrafted silversmithing, goldsmithing, and lapidary designs. My minimalist style focuses on enhancing and accenting the beauty already present within the stone without the design being a distraction. I feel some designers can become to focused on the design itself in lose the stone in the process.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My designs are inspired by the beauty of the natural world and are meant to accentuate the ever-present beauty in the precious and semi-precious stones I source. As such, I have a minimalist style that focuses on making that stones the true focal point of the piece. However, I use intricate coils and weaves the bring the simplicity into balance with flairs of sophistication and class. This style sets me apart from other artists. I find that many jewelry designers, especially wire artists, focus more on the complexity of the wire work or design than highlighting the stone. My pieces are styled to be able to be worn anywhere, from a fancy night on the town to just hanging out at home or with a few good friends. They are statements but not distractions. Simple yet elegant. I got to where I am today through the support and encouragement of my friends and family and years of practice in jewelry design and fashion. It wasn’t necessarily easy to get where I am today although it felt like it was. I truly enjoy my craft and the process it takes to make a piece start to finish. My commitment and patience, both as a fledgling business and with myself, have allowed me to succeed and get to where I am.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting a few of the places we would go are: The Colorado National Monument, The Grand Mesa, and Powderhorn Mountain Resort. There are a plethora of fantastic jokes and trails as well as slopes to ride in the winter. I love being outdoors and love sharing those experiences with friends even more. For food a drink a few must visit places are Monumental Beer Works, Rocklside Brewery and Restaurant, Cafe Sol, Pablo’s Pizza, and Copper Club Brewery. There are also plenty of local food trucks we would definitely be going to! For shopping and entertainment I would take them to Uncanny Valley Art Gallery, Black Poppy Studio, and A Robin’s Nest Antique Mall. Depending on the season, we may attend some local markets as well!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to thank my parents for being my biggest supporters and encouraging me to pursue this endeavor in the first place. I wouldn’t be where I am without their continued encouragement and support. I’d also like to thank the artistic community in Grand Junction for welcoming me with open arms. Lastly, a huge thanks to Sarah Wandzilak for introducing me to the art community here.
