We had the good fortune of connecting with Nerea The Fiddler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nerea, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think risk is essential to growth. It has played an essential part of my life. I am half Spanish, half French, born in the USA. I was born in this country thanks to my parents taking a risk and moving here. We later moved to Canada, another risk on their behalf. Our life was constantly moving, evolving and changing growing up and this led me to become a risk taker. The launch of my first album, the different genres of music I have explored, learned and performed as well as the different venues and events I have played for have all been different forms of risks. If you don’t try, you will never know your full potential.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an international fiddler & step dancer. I started my craft by playing traditional Scottish Celtic music and dance. I have now expanded into broader Celtic music, middle eastern music and even pop. My show is a world music experience, with violin at the forefront, and stepdancing (a folk dance) combined. Like anything that is worthwhile in this world, it was not easy. It takes time and effort to get your name “out there”. This becomes even more difficult when you live on different continents and need to restart every time you move, but it has definitely been worth it. I think my greatest advantage throughout the years, the moves, and even COVID has been my ability to adapt. When things change, or become difficult, I try a different approach until I succeed.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would go to as many state & national parks as possible as they are the true gem of Colorado. Painted Mines, Garden of the Gods, Estes park, Seven falls, etc. Also the small town of Evergreen is enchanting. I am a big foodie and most anyone close to me, family or friends, is too so we would hit my favorite restaurants such as Yemeni Grill in Aurora or the French Creperie in Fort Collins. For live music and food I would take them to the African Grill & Bar or the Mercury Cafe, as these places are super unique and special in Colorado.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My music teachers all gracefully shared their knowledge with me. I think this is so important as in our present day individualistic society where we constantly compete to succeed, many will think twice before sharing their knowledge. My teachers gave me everything they had. My mother deserves the greatest shoutout. Her support throughout my entire life has been incredible. I am forever in debt to her as she dedicated so much time to not just me, but helping me build my craft.
