Meet Bex Williams | Boudoir Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Bex Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bex, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After my first son, I struggled to return to my 9-5. I would have to wake up at 4:00 in the morning to pump, commute to Denver, work a ten-hour day, drive home in rush hour, and then spend 1-2 hours with my baby before putting him down for the night. I cried on my way to the office every single day. I read David Goggins’s “Can’t Hurt Me,” and I realized I had two choices: get over it or do something about it. We had family photos done one year, and our photographer was a mom of two young kids. When I found out how much she charged, I was impressed that photography could be such a lucrative “side hustle” for a mom. I liked the idea of being away from my kids for short periods then doing the majority of the work from the comfort of my home. I used to be ashamed to admit that I knew absolutely nothing about photography when I started this. I thought that people would only want to hire someone who had years of experience and that the rest of the photography community wouldn’t respect me because I didn’t get into this business because of a passion for photography. I’m not ashamed of that anymore because I have invested so much time and money into learning and growing my business. I started off self-taught and devoured YouTube tutorials, but I found the market incredibly competitive. At the end of my first year, I had barely turned a profit. Once I found my mentors, I learned how to run a business. I learned about taxes, liability insurance, registering with the state, profit margins, investing, determining my cost of doing business, etc. I knew that I had to commit entirely if I wanted to turn this into a real business that could replace my income and support my family and not just a side hustle. I couldn’t be half in (accepting any job that came my way and working under the table). I had to give one hundred percent and risk failure. If there’s one thing I will always bet on, it’s myself. After two years in business, I discovered boudoir photography. I finally found a form of photography that I know I was meant to do. I love empowering women. I love helping women build their confidence and self-love.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My Why: Boudoir is about empowerment. I am here to show women that they are beautiful, sexy, and powerful exactly as they are. I focus on flattering posing and not body modification in post-production. I am not a digital plastic surgeon. I firmly believe that photoshopping in boudoir is not at all empowering, rather, it perpetuates body shame. I’m here to teach ladies to embrace their bodies and the evolutions we go through as women. My Facebook group Badass Boudoir by Bex Williams focuses on empowering women and teaching them to release the need to hold ourselves to society’s unrealistic expectations for our appearances. Sexy isn’t a size, it’s a mindset. I strive to show my clients that I don’t have to change you in order to make you beautiful. You are worthy and perfect exactly as you are. We are humans. We are meant to grow and stretch and wrinkle and fold and every single season of your body is beautiful. Body acceptance and self-love are a journey. We all have good days and bad days, but you are worthy on every single one of them.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would have a day dedicated to Red Rocks for a concert or film on the rocks and of course Willy’s Wings. Would definitely plan a day to hit Garden of the Gods and the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. A day for Idaho Springs for a hike and some Beau Jos Pizza. A day in Denver for a Rockies game, art museum, and a Guard and Grace steak dinner. A day at the Rocky Mountain National Park is a must. A day trip to the Sand Dunes would be fun. And finally a day trip to the Paint Mines.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am so grateful for the local photographers who have embodied the “community over competition” mindset. They have been willing to share information/resources, answer questions, refer clients, support me, and help me grow. There is room for all of us. Grateful for the endless motivation I have come to depend on from people like David Goggins, Tony Robbins, Eric Thomas, Les Brown, Conor Mcgregor, and Mel Robbins. Shoutout to Red Rocks Church for the sense of belonging and love I have found with them over the last few years. Shoutout to my husband who trusts me and believes in me each time I take a new risk.
