Meet Eric Mau | The Head Nomad

We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric Mau and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eric, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Work life balance when you own a business doesn’t really come into play. Because if you believe in something so much and you love what you are doing to build towards the future, you would sacrifice the balance now to make it in the later years!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The start of my retail story was an easy one, as I was in college and a buddy called me up after classes and asked what I was doing with the rest of my day. I explained that besides training and some studying nothing. He told me that someone at his work quit with no notice and his boss couldn’t work by himself, and if I wanted to come in to work there he had already told his boss about me and it was my job if I wanted it. So with no interview or even thinking about applying for a job, there I was accepting a job over the phone on a referral of a friend, and that was the start of my retail career.
But lately I still do a few small jobs as a Sales Rep for a few companies, and I find it a great way for me to not have to worry if we have a slower day, because we are not 100% dependent on the business to support us. The business only needs to pay for itself and the couple employees that we have helping us out during the week, and then on the weekends my wife and I work to give them the weekends off.
It all keeps us grounded to supporting the business in every step and watching it grow over the past 2 years, and we just make sure to celebrate each day!!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This has happened already so much, and each time we start with a morning heading up through the Colorado National Monument, to see the sunrise over the Grand Valley here in Grand Junction, plus seeing the Bighorns along the way is an added bonus. For us it is all about the outdoors, and being able to share that with all of our friends that come to visit is a great joy, whether we hit up the Colorado River for an afternoon, or Mtn Bike on the numerous trails that make Grand Junction a must. If we have the time we always take them to the Ouray Hot Springs, one of our favorite places to rewind and reset. Food wise we have so many great local places in Downtown that we love to support as they help support us, so it is almost endless for some great food and drinks.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents deserve a lot of the credit for what we are doing and have been building up to do for quite some time. They opened and ran a successful small chain of convenience stores and a restaurant for 20+ years, and I got to see them grow and develop the business over that time and we wouldn’t be in our business if it wasn’t for them. If my dad was here today to see what we have already accomplished he would not only be proud he surely would try to help in anyway see us succeed.
