The best business decision I’ve ever made? Collaborate. Poetry is a solitary practice in many ways–especially writing it. But sharing it is another matter. I am presently collaborating with a science writer on a podcast (Emerging Form: A podcast on creative process), with a mindfulness instructor on a monthly gathering (Soul Writers Circle), with a life coach in a surreptitious kindness cabal (Secret Agents of Change), with a pianist/cultural historian teaching classes and giving performances around the art of Vincent van Gogh, and many other projects. I would say the most important decision I made wasn’t necessarily physical, but instead mental. Being reliant on TikTok views in the initial stages of my career, I would get frustrated when the numbers didn’t match what I thought my product was worth. Instead, I’ve recently focused on loving my content first, and letting the numbers be an additional bonus. At one point, well into my career path of being a jewelry artist, I had a moment when I felt like I needed to make a tough decision. I remember the moment well. I was sitting on my bed, undergoing financial stress, and I was contemplating getting a job. Prior to jewelry I was a carpenter and a job superintendent, and in that field, I knew I could get a job anytime, anywhere. The single most important decision I’ve made that has contributed to my success is my decision to join SHE Leads, an all-women leads group in the Denver area. SHE stands for Supporting Heart and Enterprise, and that is exactly what this group does. Before joining SHE Leads, I was a member of two other networking groups, and it felt like every meeting was the same—surface-level niceties and me left feeling inauthentic and socially awkward. With SHE, from day one, I felt like part of a kind, compassionate, supportive family who wants to see me and my business succeed.
