We had the good fortune of connecting with Abby Watkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Abby, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
I have found that four habits have been the backbone of my success: consistency, reliability, connecting with people, and being good with kids. Consistency that my clients know what to expect from me every time, whether it’s the quality of my work, communicating, or the way I run a session. Reliability has built trust—people know I show up prepared, meet deadlines, and follow through on my word. Connecting with people is SO important; whether it’s a nervous bride or a shy child, my ability to connect with my clients helps me bring out their authentic selves. Lastly, being good with kids has been huge – when children feel comfortable and enjoy the process, it shows in the photos, and that joy is contagious for the whole family.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a portrait photographer, and I truly love what I do.

I started very small—just me, my camera, and a passion for learning. It wasn’t easy; there were challenges, late nights, and moments of doubt. But over the past 15 years, I’ve grown my little dream into a thriving business in a way that’s felt very organic. Every step has taught me something, but the biggest lessons have been to trust my gut instincts and to say yes to opportunities, even when they were outside my comfort zone. Those yeses have led to some of the most meaningful moments in my career—from having my work published and winning awards to being featured on national television multiple times. But beyond all of that, my heart is in capturing people as they truly are—their laughter, their quiet moments, the connections between them—so their stories can be preserved for generations.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend came to visit Castle Pines, Colorado for a week, I’d want them to get a true taste of both the city and the mountains.
We’d start the first morning slow—coffee at the Exchange coffee house, because good coffee is non-negotiable. Then we’d wander through downtown Denver – Larimer Square, popping into the boutiques and maybe stopping for lunch at Union Station. That night, dinner would be some kind of Mexican food, because tacos are life.. with a margarita (or two) to toast the week ahead.
One day we’d head to the mountains—maybe a drive up to Estes Park or Keystone—so they could see that Colorado magic up close. We’d hike, take way too many photos, and finish the day with dinner and a view, because it doesn’t get any better than those Rocky Mountains. I would have to take them to Garden of the Gods, and Roxborough state Park.. because those Red Rocks are magical.
The weekend would mean hitting the South Pearl Street Farmers Market, and maybe catching a concert at Red Rocks Amphitheater if the timing was right.
By the time they left, they’d have a camera roll full of mountain views, a caffeine buzz from Denver’s best coffee shops, and dreams to come back and explore even more.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband is my biggest supporter. He motivates and encourages me more than anyone in this world.
