We had the good fortune of connecting with Adam Dougherty and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Adam, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I had been working in various shops in LA for the better part of 10 years and was getting burnt out on the idea of being told what to make, what to sculpt, and how to do it. When Covid hit in 2020, I moved back to CO and decided I wanted to try out building my own shop where I was able to choose what jobs I took. I try to only take jobs where I get to be creative and original with my character designs. I really enjoy making monsters that no one has ever seen before, I love to make something totally weird and original. I started my own business in 2021 and have been working steadily with so much creative freedom, it’s definitely really rewarding to be able to do my own style and create the kinds of things that I would want to see on screen.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been making monsters ever since I was a kid. I love the Universal Monsters, particularly the Creature. That practical element has always been in the forefront of my mind and I always prefer practical effects to CGI. I’ve taken a lot from the greats like Dick Smith and Jim Henson and incorporated modern technology, like digital sculpting and 3d printing to have a totally original method of creating things that have the weight and feeling of my favorite creatures from before the digital era. I think that’s something that sets me apart, being able to blend older and contemporary methods in a way that looks and feels seamless.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a huge thrift store person. I especially love the Goodwill Outlets, you can find the best treasures hidden in those bins. I’d probably hit up the different Goodwill Outlets around the area, maybe stop in at the Edgewater Public Market for something to eat. There’s a lot of great thrift stores in this area – that’s a week’s worth of activities right there.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Early on, I got a lot of encouragement from Daniel Roebuck, a very good friend of mine. When I was a kid going to monster conventions, Dan helped me get involved in this industry and encouraged me to pursue it. I’ve always been a big fan of monster movies and creatures – something Dan and I share. It’s really wonderful to see his success and have his encouragement in my own work.
