We had the good fortune of connecting with Alan Karmin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The “business” that we are addressing here is actually two-fold. The first part of it is the blogging and story-telling. Melissa and I were, and are, of the exploring mindset. We have always liked to seek out adventure, discovering the known and, sometimes, the unknown. And telling those stories became a way to share our experiences, especially with an older generation since we are more experienced than most due to our ages…so we cater to a different audience than most when it comes to social media. The second part of it is a product for which we recently acquired a patent – a pair of running shorts that are specifically made to prevent skin burns while wearing a utility belt that may rise up while moving. As we have both been long distance runners, we have experienced a lot and the idea was developed when I was running the New York City Marathon. So in pulling it all together, we have worked hard to create a brand that is recognizable, helpful, and fun.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been a writer all of my life. My degree is in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Miami. While attending UM, I was a beat reporter covering the New York Yankees in spring trainings for a local NBC affiliate, as well as a stringer for the Associated Press and UPI. I broadcasted baseball games for the University of Miami, and spring training games for the Baltimore Orioles and Montreal Expos. Most recently, I have been writing original and compelling content about the New York Mets for RisingApple.com and about travel for TripSided, both subsidiaries of the national site Fansided; about the Mets for newyorkmetsmania.com; and for a food, travel, and activity blog – karmelknockingaround.com.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a week to take a friend around, I would want to share with them the experience of the towns of Longmont, of course, Boulder, Golden, Colorado Springs, and Estes Park. The activities would have to include a visit to Rocky Mountain National Park, Garden of the Gods, Coors Field, and the Coors Brewing tour. But there are also some hiking trails like Anne U. White in Boulder that are a hidden gems. There are so many breweries that have local beers that should really be explored, however, anyone not used to the altitude should beware of the alcohol consumption.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It’s Melissa’s research, planning, and strategy that has made the adventures possible.
