We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrew Fix and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrew, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
This is a great question. Rather than thinking about work/life balance, I like to think of this as work/life integration. To me, having them be in even ratio to one another (like a see-saw) is unrealistic. What I like to do is find ways to integrate the things that I am passionate about (fitness, health, cooking, time with my family, friends, etc.) into my lifestyle. An easy example would be taking a walk during a meeting rather than sitting on Zoom or in an office building. Additionally, I will meet friends for workouts and fitness activities, rather than going out to lunch or to the bar. Finding these easy ways to incorporate work and lifestyle together really helps my idea of balance.
THe major change in how I manage my time has happened earlier this year. My wife, Erin, and I just had our son, Aiden, in February 2024. Now I spend more time at home, going on walks, playing on the floor and hanging out with him. This means I have less time to get other things done… But I’ve noticed it’s all about my mindset. I know that there is nothing more important that I could be doing than spending time with him. The other work tasks and to do items like folding the laundry will always be there. It helps keep things in perspective.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’m proud to be part of the team at Physio Room. We have a fitness-based physical therapy practice that specializes in helping recreational athletes continue to be involved in the sports and activities that make their lives’ fulfilling. We have providers that specialize in various activity niches to ensure clients are being paired with the best person for their situation.
Physio Room was founded by Chris Robl in 2018. Born out of a vision to challenge the status quo of healthcare and redefine how physical therapy is delivered. I had the opportunity to join the practice in May of 2020. After a challenging decision-making process to walk away from the comfortable corporate physical therapy job, Erin and I relocated to the suburbs of Denver, Colorado. Though we have faced many challenges along the way, the decision could not have been better. What we are doing aligns with our beliefs of how healthcare should be and allows us to provide team members with great job opportunities. At Physio Room we work with clients in a way that they are treated as an individual rather than a number.
One of the main challenges we have faced is the need to obtain all of our own clients. With the nature of the practice we have – we do not survive on referrals from other medical providers or physicians. We thrive on word-of-mouth referrals and recommendations from coaches, trainers, and our clients. What we’ve learned is that when you take care of people well, and are not afraid to ask them to help support your small business, they are happy to do it. Each time a client refers us a friend or family member, introduces us to another business owner they know, or even leaves us a glowing review online it is so valuable.
Another challenge we have faced is simply managing the economics of running a business in today’s financial landscape. Navigating the balance of being able to run a profitable business, pay our team a fair (above average) salary and also provider a quality experience that is affordable for our clients is a delicate balance. We know that in order to offer the level of service we want in a clinic that looks the part, and attract the team members we want to be part of our practice we can’t be the cheapest option in town; and that’s okay.
What we’d want people to know about Physio Room is that we provide an unmatched physical therapy experience. Our team is fitness-forward and everyone is passionate about helping people continue to live an active life for as long as possible. In our office, people will get something that is hard to find in other medical environments… time.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Great question! Despite living in the Denver area for only four years, we have been fortunate to see some amazing areas. We always love taking people to see Red Rocks or see a show at one of the great concert venues here in town. Naturally, there has to be a hike or some sight seeing involved. Whether it’s Lookout Mountain, Roxborough State Park, or even Waterton Canyon we love getting outside for some fresh air and sunshine.
For the sports lovers, there’s no shortage of opportunities here in Denver. We’ve been to each of the four major teams’ games; Broncos, Nuggets, Avalanche and Rockies. All of them are exciting and the fans here in Denver are very passionate about their local sports!
As far as places to eat and drink or socialize, there are tons! Though it’s not in our favorite part of town, we really liked the Stanley Marketplace and have taken multiple people there when they are in town for visits.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Ultimately, there are many people and things that played a vital role in my ability to get to the place that I am today. My parents always made sure that my siblings and I had the things that we needed. Though we didn’t always get the things that we wanted, we had every opportunity to participate in after school activities, play sports, and join social groups when we were growing up.
It can’t be understated, the impact that playing multiple sports had on me while growing up; especially in high school. Football, wrestling and track each provided me with a unique experience that shaped my development. The mentorship of coaches, camaraderie of teammates, and the nature of team vs. individual based sports all played a pivotal role.
As an adult all the instructors in school and in my clinical experiences helped my achieve success with clients and continue to move forward in my career. Along the way my wife has been supportive in every direction I wanted to go. including a relocation to Kansas City from the Chicago area, and again to the Denver area where we are now.
