We had the good fortune of connecting with Ariel Strickler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ariel, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Fantastic question! Work life balance is so important. When I first started my business I was non-stop working. As the business grew so did my exhaustion- I eventually burnt out. Clients and employees call and text any day and any time. I knew I needed to set strict boundaries between work and life. I established “working hours” and “off day” hours as well as allowed myself to have a few hour grace period to respond. I try to respond as quickly as possible but I realized I was dropping everything to get to work. I was missing out on family time, girl time and me time! I still have to adjust the balance at times but overall it has helped my mental and physical well-being. I am actually more present, and more productive in my work life and my personal life because of the healthy balance.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
At BOLD N’ Bitchin’ we specialize in professional eyelash extensions. We strive to have the best quality lashes on the market. Each set of lashes is customizable to our client. We can create a natural, subtle look or a dramatic, voluminous look. We want our clients to leave feeling BOLD N’ Bitchin’ After 4 years we have opened a second location and now expanding into retail, as well as lash training. We have spent hours and hours testing and finding the perfect product. When creating the lash retail line my focus was high quality eyelash extensions, that are easy to use, sold at an affordable price and importantly, eco-friendly. As I researched other lash retail I noticed most lash extensions came in a big shiny box, and in it, had lashes in tiny plastic container, wrapped in four different plastic bags, and stuffed with extra paper. We are proud to create such a high quality product that is also eco- friendly. The lash retail line is set to launch at the end of 2021, along with BOLD N’ Bitchin’ Lash training. There are strict training, and certification rules and regulations in Colorado so the process is long. I have put sweat and tears into developing a high quality training manual that will set my future students up for long term success. Not only will we discuss lashes but there will also be a section of training specifically for small business start up. I have spoke with too many lash artists that have failed simply due to basic business 101. The dreams are big and the process is long. I have failed many times, and I probably will in the future, but I have learned the most from those failures. I have had weeks where I am stuck in a business slump with no motivation to work. I have hit burnout and thought of quitting. It has taken many hours of work to get to where I am and I only see piles of work ahead of me. When I am overcome by challenges, I have allowed myself to have a break every now and then, and shift my attention to other parts of the business that interest me at the time. Occasionally, I do have to put my head down and get work done that I have zero desire to do. But overall, I do this because I love what I do. You have to have passion for what you do or you will have zero desire to push through the tough times and overcome the challenges.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When my friends visit I always suggest visiting the mountain towns. Summit County is so much fun during both summer and winter. There is so much to do outside. If we aren’t hitting the mountains I love taking friends downtown to sporting event, and/or the Buell Theater. I have to take them to William and Graham for late night cocktails and Dazzle for a weekend brunch- both are always a crowd pleaser and they always want to go back.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are two people that really stand in my mind when when I think support, mentorship and encouragement. My mom and my man. My mom has supported me and pushed me since the day I started BOLD N’ Bitchin,’ 4 years ago! She is a wonderful business woman and has an abundance of advice. We have spent hours talking about my business and she really helps bring the ideas to life. At times she really pisses me off, and we argue, but I have to admit she is a big reason for much of my success. Mom quote to live by: “drive results, drive results, drive results” My man has such a leadership mentality. He is a fearless, strategic, and successful entrepreneur. The way he runs his business and they way he envisions his success is contagious. It has literally made me re-think how I envision my business. Because of him I am striving to be a better planner, and have a set path to where I want to go. My man’s quote to live by “I have a plan and I see where I am going, and its very good!”
