We had the good fortune of connecting with Aron Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aron, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I decided to start MAMCO Rescue I was motivated by the incredible need that existed within the rescue world. I had fostered for many years prior and learned that most of the time pregnant dogs or dogs with young nursing puppies were often euthanized first in high kill shelters in Texas due to the high costs associated with their care. I also learned that if mothers were allowed to raise their babies, they were often left behind while the puppies were taken by rescue. This was unacceptable to me because I love the mama dogs and they had been the primary focus of my previous foster care journey.
What should our readers know about your business?
MAMCO Rescue is a specialized rescue, in that we focus on pregnant and nursing dogs and their puppies. Most rescues can only handle a few pregnant and nursing dogs per year because of the costs, and I am extremely proud of the 13,600 moms and puppies we have saved in the past 6 1/2 years.
We are a unique rescue because we have a paid staff. Most rescues are volunteer based, but we learned early on that we needed to have paid employees with expertise in caring for moms and puppies in order to provide quality care. Having a paid staff really helps set us apart from the others because we are always available for fosters and adopters via phone or email, and we can provide a level of care most others cannot.
The moms and puppies we have saved have come with their share of challenges. We have overcome illness, extreme veterinary costs, and slow periods post pandemic that have almost bankrupted us time and time again. The rising costs of caring for the dogs and veterinary care has been really hard on us. However, our support base is strong and we have the best adopters and donors in the world. Whenever we put out a call for financial help, they are the first to step up and lend a hand.
I think the biggest lesson I have learned in rescue is that both challenges and successes are short lived. During challenging periods we have to be adaptable and oftentimes have to change the way we do things in order to keep going. For example, there is currently a severe foster shortage in Denver, and we were having an extremely hard time placing dogs in foster homes. Instead of giving up, we obtained our shelter license so we are able to keep dogs at our facility and stay open.
Success is also short lived, so keeping the budget manageable during the good times is key. During the pandemic we saw more adoptions than ever and adjusted our budget to match the success, which caused us a great deal of disappointment when the adoptions plummeted. Staying humble and frugal is super important.
The biggest thing I want the world to know about MAMCO Rescue is that we care about people and dogs. We believe that good people are extremely important to rescue, and as a result we do our best to take care of our adopters even post adoption. Our goal is success through relationship and communication.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would most likely take them to see a show at the DCPA, a concert at Red Rocks, and of course we would wander around Estes Park for a few days. Colorado is such a beautiful place with so many different venues to visit and explore. There is something for everyone here.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give an enormous shout out to Jen Sevcik, the owner of Duality Fit in Denver. Jen has not only fostered many litters for us, she is also a donor, and a huge advocate for our rescue. She incorporates MAMCO into her business dealings to help bring in adopters, fosters, and financial support. She has most recently started helping with our Instagram and has really improved the content and our followers. Jen is a hero in more ways than one.
