We had the good fortune of connecting with Aubrey Mable & Kathleen Hooper and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aubrey Mable & Kathleen Hooper, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
We wear alllll the hats🎩. As independent musicians, we truly are on our own. We aren’t working with a label to support our efforts, and have built this business as a team of two until now. We do it all – email venues, book shows, create marketing materials, design, order, & sell our own merch, craft & edit our website, reach out for connections with brands and other bands, build community, write our own songs, and keep everything afloat. That being said, it’s been incredible to recently have the ability to hire our talented friends to support the growth and brand development of LVDY. And we’re inspired to write songs for them too. 😉 Another interesting peek into the music industry that we’re not sure people are aware of how is the industry has shifted and changed around compensation, or lack there of. People used sell CD’s and vinyls, play live shows, and have a variety of ways to make money. These days, with everything on steaming platforms, we make 0.006 cents for every stream, or pennies to the amount of work that is put into creating this music. Not to mention, with live shows on pause, we’re doing everything can to keep the music alive. We believe we’re in a unique space right now and trying as many new things as we can. We’re grateful to be learning as we go every day.🎶
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The two of us met in 2012 while studying abroad in New Zealand. The friendship was instantaneous and we stayed connected over the years as we were living in different states. Aubrey moved back to Colorado in late 2017 and a failed relationship landed her on Kathleen’s basement pull-out sofa. As we were spending a lot of time together under the same roof, we started busking on the streets of Denver and writing songs. The musical and creative chemistry all happened so naturally. I don’t think either one of us ever expected to be pursuing music as a career, but now we couldn’t imagine doing anything else. We’re not just two gals who like to sing songs, we are simultaneously storytellers. We find inspiration in everything from nature to questions about life and death, other music that moves us physically and emotionally, and what it feels like to be humans in the subtlest of moments. Each song is a part of our story. We’re not the types to just stand in front of a crowd and not let them in. We think vulnerability is one of the coolest parts of our jobs. We’ve taken a LOT of chances. “Maybe it’s a long shot, but just reach out and see what happens.” “Throw this in the mix even though it’s never been done before.” “Who cares if we don’t know exactly what we’re doing. Who does anyway?” We pride ourselves at being go-getters and facing challenges head-on. We fail forward and don’t let the fact that we’ve never done something before stop us. Our story is simple and honest.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Welcome to Denver, Colorado! You may have a desire to move here after 24 hours. First – stop what you’re doing and chug some water. Repeat this every 30 minutes every day to avoid altitude sickness. Also, be careful with your alcohol consumption. It’s real. Double also, those big chocolate bars you buy at the dispensary, DON’T eat the whole thing. Start your morning with some delightful Denver coffee. You can’t go wrong at any of these places: Jubilee Roasting Co., Crema, Huckleberry Roasters, Novo, Amethyst – Kat’s fav is the Lavender Latte w/ Oat milk. Hungry for some lunch? Eat at all of these places if you can: Hop Alley, City O’City, Dio Mio Pasta, Denver Central Market, El Camino Community Tavern (if it’s okay for your belly, eat the queso. Just do it.) Things to do: Sunset walk around Sloan’s Lake, find a scooter to ride around the city, if you have time to head West, pick a mountain town and enjoy the views. Check out the art in RiNo or chill at a park for epic dog/people watching. If you’re ready to spend a pretty penny on some new gear, or just hang out around the new smell of winter coats and tents, get lost in REI in Denver. During non-COVID times – you better check out a show or a hike around Red Rocks Amphitheater. It will blow your mind and change the way you see live music for the rest of your life. If Boulder is in your sights – go hike around the Flat Irons. Don’t forget your water! Drink: There are endless breweries and distilleries all over the city. Take your pick! Some of our favs for a drink are the Ramble Hotel, Improper City, Avanti, Ten Barrell Brewery, Bear Creek Distillery, and 14er Brewing. There are also some great spots that serve non-alcoholic drinks like Honey (best vibe in Denver).
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We have SO many people to thank. Here are just a few. Sofar Sounds for allowing us to grow our local and global community of listeners. It’s shaped the way we play and connect with audiences. Our dedicated LVDYMOB – this crew of lvdies, men, all humans, babies, dogs, and plants has shown up so hard for us over the past 2 years.🌿 We see you and love you! Our families – it’s not every day your child calls you and tells you they want to quit their jobs and become a musician. Or maybe it is. The support from our parents and siblings and larger families has been monumental in our growth, confidence, and endless outpouring of love. Lulu Clair – our “Momager” who believed in us from Day 1. She is a dear friend, confidant, and brilliant woman we’re so happy to have on our team. Our partners – these two encourage us to be our most creative, highest selves as we embark on a different journey and cheer us on the whole time. They also make provide great inspo for music😉.
