We had the good fortune of connecting with Ava Truckey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ava, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
As a business owner, I feel responsible and passionate about the ways in which I give back to my community: the voices I amplify, with whom I collaborate, and who I support. I source ingredients locally when possible, gift boxes from the bakery each week, and I pay other local creatives full price for their time/product. At the basic level, this is what folks – especially (white) business owners – should be doing. I feel that baked goods are love, but so is putting your money where your mouth is.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Butter Moon Bake Co is the brainchild of Ava Truckey, single mother of two and Denver resident. Ava’s commitment to her community is producing unique, high quality products – featuring unexpected flavors and local products. Meaningful collaboration with the front range’s Black, femme, and non binary business owners has always been and will continue to be a priority to Ava and at Butter Moon. When she is not dreaming up new flavors or tinkering in the kitchen, Ava loves hiking, strong black coffee, and, of course, feeding people.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love hiking and being outdoors, so I would start off hiking in Crestone and staying in an earthship home, and then make my way back to Denver, making stops at Joyful Journey Hot Springs, hanging in Salida and hitting the farmers market, back to Denver for a cocktail at The Block and dinner at Hop Alley.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Lara Russo of Yay! Graphic Design is my web designer, web developer, graphic designer, mentor and friend extraordinaire. She has a brilliant mind and thoughtful soul, and Butter Moon Bake Co wouldn’t be what it is without her.
