We had the good fortune of connecting with Banthom House and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Banthom House, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Creating and sharing art helps us transcend the walls that we build around ourselves and the social norms that discourage our vulnerability and emotional expression. Being artists allows us to share our perspective on the world around us and open the door for deeper connection and insight into our experience as humans. Our specific form of musical expression feels like an emotional outlet. Performing live is a profound way of connecting and sharing those emotions with others. There is a deep fulfillment that comes from seeing the impact that this expression has on an audience.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Our diverse musical backgrounds come together to create a very unique fusion of folk styles. Allegra’s love of Irish music coupled with her exceptional technical ability from her classical training, Aaron’s songwriting and storytelling prowess along with his broad folk song knowledge and multi-instrumental abilities, and David’s love and history of Bluegrass and Jazz improvisation all bring a rich flair to our music. We are so proud to have been able to create our debut EP, Banthom House, earlier this year because it is such a beautiful representation of this fusion. All three members of Banthom House are also actors as well as musicians and this adds an extra edge and nuance to everything we do as a band.

We had a lot of obstacles when we first started playing together in the Summer of 2020. Music venues were still closed due to the lockdown, and bars and restaurants were still many months away from hiring musical acts. We played exclusively outside in parks or busking on the street until some of the outdoor venues began to reopen. We had a lot to learn about amplifying and balancing our instruments with our limited resources at the time. Luckily, Aaron is very experienced in sound engineering due to his work overseeing and curating the musical, theatrical and gallery events at The People’s Building in Aurora. We also learned a lot about communicating with one another. Collaboration can be a challenging process, but it’s also very rewarding. We have improved in our abilities to listen to one another and thus better create a great experience for our audiences.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It is difficult to narrow down specifics; however, do check out as many local artists, musicians, theaters, galleries, and performance venues as possible! There are a number of Arts districts in the greater Denver area and the theater, music, and visual arts communities are teeming with local artists who could use your support! Miners Alley, DCPA, the People’s Building, Dairy Arts Center, NoBo Arts District, Benchmark Theatre, Aurora Fox, BDT Stage, Town Hall Arts Center, the Arvada Center… this list goes on! They are all remarkable organizations showcasing incredible talent and need patrons!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We could not have grown into what we are today if not for Miners Alley Playhouse in Golden, Colorado and the bevy of compassionate artists therein. We met at Miners Alley while performing in a production of Once the musical in the fall of 2019. The following year, they twice asked us to perform in their live-streaming concert series and helped us gain publicity. They have also helped us to make connections with other local performance venues. We named one of the original tunes on our debut EP in their honor. It’s called “Playing in the Alley”. They are a generous organization that supports artists and we have been so fortunate to be the beneficiaries of their magnanimity!
