We had the good fortune of connecting with Ben Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ben, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
15 years ago I was a part owner in a medical transcription company, and we were losing clients due to technology changes in the healthcare industry. I didn’t have a resume, and I didn’t want to go work for someone else. I started thinking about other industries we could do transcription for that had called our office over the years and asked for us to transcribe for them. Looking into the legal, law enforcement, academic, and financial industries showed me there was hope if I were to break off and start my own company. The size of the legal transcription industry alone was enough for me to be confident we would have a fighting chance to succeed. We weren’t inventing something no one had ever seen before, which for me was enough to move forward and give it a go.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is more than a transcription company. We provide peace of mind for our clients that are mostly in high stress jobs and need to have the best vendors supporting them as possible so they can do their jobs at the highest levels. The lawyers, doctors, detectives, and researchers we work with need to be able to rely on someone who will get things done on time and accurately so they can keep moving forward. What we do for them is a vital aspect of their jobs, without us being on time and accurate they would not be able to do their jobs well, and we take that responsibility seriously.

I am most proud when we get an email from a client that renews their contract with us without us having to fight for it. They sole source us as their provider because we have done a great job for them and they know they won’t be able to find a better transcription company than us.

We got here as a business by providing the best customer service in the industry and understanding what we do for our clients very important. What we do for them affects many people and we know that, so we don’t mess around. Everything we do is in order to provide the best transcription services in the US.

No, getting here was not easy. It was actually very difficult and I made a lot of mistakes along the way. I’ve hired the wrong people, hired the wrong vendors for different things, and been ripped off by clients promising to pay later, Don’t repeat the same mistake twice, that’s definitely one of the most important lessons I’ve learned. Trust and verify when hiring a new employee or vendor. Meaning, call their references to make sure they are who they say they are. Make sure you get a coach or mentor as soon as possible, and get as much PR as possible as soon as possible.

We take our jobs very seriously, this is not something we take for granted. What we do every day here affects a lot of people across many different parts of the business world and we know that. We know that if we cause a delay with one transcript it could affect dozens of people down the line, and we do not want that to happen. We don’t want people to be stressed out because of something we messed up.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If a friend was coming to town for a week I would more than likely start with dinner in Cherry Creek at Machete, followed by a few drinks at North. I’d take them to a day game at Coors Field and then stay downtown and have dinner at Union Station’s Ultreia. A burger at Cherry Cricket in Cherry Creek North for lunch followed by a walk through Wash Park and maybe a stop at Max Gill and Grill for an appetizer. Dinner at Barolo Grill and a few drinks after at Don’s Mix Drinks. If there isn’t a good concert that week I would take them to Red Rocks and climb the stairs a few times during the morning and stop at Mac Nation Cafe at Morris & Mae for lunch. Have to have dinner at Izakaya or Sushi Den and get some ice cream and Bonnie Brae Ice Cream. The last night in town I would take them to Ni Tuyo in Bonnie Brae for food and service they won’t forget.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Bill Treadwell was my old coach and Vistage chair. He, and our group, helped me through a lot of situations I would have never been able to get through that well on my own. Bill owns his own business and was an executive vice president at a fortune 500 company, so he has been there and done that. It was amazing every time I asked him about how to do something he knew the answer right away. He was in it for me, and was there to help me succeed 100%.
