Meet Billie Colson | Artist/Gallery owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Billie Colson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Billie, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I feel like developing relationships with people in your community is one of the most important things to do.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I love doing art that make people smile. Typically close up subjects of humorous animals. I love doing other subjects too, but my audience really enjoys this work and I enjoy doing it.
I’ve learned that you need to find out what the art buying public responses to and produce a body of work that has a continuity to the work that they can add to a collection. It’s good to do what you are inspired to do, but if you want to make sales, you need to find out what people like.
I like people to know that they can count on me to do what I say I will do. Being a person of keeping your word is very important these days.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to Benson Sculpture Park to see the wonderful collection of sculptures in our town. I would drive them up the Big Thompson Canyon, it’s an amazing drive. I would take them to Estes Park, both for the views and the quaint town it is. I would take them to one of my favorite hangouts, Henry’s Pub.
Of course I would take them to my gallery and the other 2 galleries in town.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would say Norm & Pat Toman who owned Art of the Rockies Gallery. They are retired now, but showed me how to be a business that you can trust.
