We had the good fortune of connecting with Boogie Lights and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Boogie, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
One of my favorite quotes or affirmations is extremely simple, “Be Weird”. It’s a reminder to be unapologetically yourself without the worry of judgement from others. This affirmation became a huge influence on who I am today when I was about 10 years old. My older sister Heidi had screen printed a sweatshirt with the two simple words “Be Weird”. Those two words changed my life and always remind myself to be who I am and never be sorry for it. Be goofy. Be weird. Be YOU.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an artist named Boogie Lights that combines drums and live instrumentation with electronic dance music. I started off in college as a drummer in a Funk Rock band called Soul Junction. After releasing our first album and independently booking a US tour, which originally brought me to Denver, I realized the other members didn’t have quite the same long term vision that I had. In 2015 after coming back from tour, I decided I was going to branch off on my own to create a new solo project that would infuse live drums with dance music, specifically with a goal of bringing back Disco in the right way. It’s been a long journey teaching myself the art of DJing and music production to a point where I feel truly confident as a performer.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love the mountains so that might be the first place I would take them. Most likely head to Idaho Springs and hike up St. Mary’s glacier which is always an easy first hike to get acclimated and feel the beauty of Colorado. Would probably grab some BBQ in the town at Smokin’ Yards and snag a beer from Westbound & Down. Would absolutely try to see a show at Red Rocks and if there’s nothing good that week at least take them there to see the marvelous venue during the day. Would also take a trip through RINO or Santa Fe art district to check out some murals and pop around to some local hangouts.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my mom, Ginger Henrichs. She is the main reason I am who I am today. From an early age she taught my large family of 8 kids to always be grateful for what we have, go after what we want, and encouraged us to be different. Her favorite saying is borrowed from a Dr. Seuss line, “Be youer than you”. Her and my dad Michael helped embody that saying in us everyday and encouraged us to always be ourselves. Heck, if it wasn’t for her I most likely would’ve never played the drums. As a toddler while trying to fix dinner and juggle 7 other kids she would set up pots and pans with some wooden spoons for me to just bang away. Then in middle school decided it would be FUN to rent a drum set for the summer, just for the fun of it! I haven’t met many other moms who choose to ruin their ear drums and I’m so thankful mine did.
