We had the good fortune of connecting with Brooklyn Daugherty and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brooklyn, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The success of our business really comes from the intentions behind how and why we design. Cult Creative started with the idea that design should be focused on the occupants and not the designer. We love people and wanted the opportunity to interact more closely with our clients, get to know them on a personal level, learn about their lives, their priorities and their family cultures. This knowledge become the basis of each project as we create spaces catered to helping them live their lives well. We want the homes we design to. be a catalyst for our homeowners to build better relationships, have better interactions and to cultivate the lifestyles they desire.
Often architects approach a project with a set style and aesthetic, but by broadening our approach, Cult Creative is able to provide guidance to homeowners without boxing them into one specific genre. Nearly every homeowner we work with has heard us say that at the end of the project, we don’t have to live in this home – they do. We recognize from day one that our work only exists because homeowners trust us to develop their dreams into 3-dimensional realities. And that’s why our owner-first approach is so important, and I think, really the keystone to our success.
What should our readers know about your business?
Cult Creative is a boutique architecture and design studio specializing in custom new homes, additions, and renovations. Through an owner-first approach, we strive to create designs that meet our clients needs and express their individual and unique cultures.
Before starting Cult Creative we were working in the realm of institutional design, creating churches, schools, and office spaces for larger organizations. The design process was often a matter of working with committees to create space that served the greatest common denominator. We gleaned great experience and technical expertise through this work as we lead multi-million dollar projects through design and construction. Considering where to take the next steps in our careers it quickly became apparent that we deeply desired work that was more connected to building users and creates more individualized expression. This desire to work closely with individuals and create work driven by the owner as inspiration is what led us to custom residential design.
One of the unexpected challenges of moving from commercial work into residential design has been bringing a sense of professionalism to an an arena often less organized in its approach. We’ve found that residential builders are often less keen on documentation, contracts, and other formalized processes than their commercial counterparts. We’ve been able seek out partners in the industry who value bringing this level of service to their clients as well as help clients navigate and ask for more formalized processes with contractors who might not already have these as standard practice. We see the benefits of the clarity in communication, understanding of project scope and cost, and a reduced overall stress of those involved when a few more formalities are in place.
As we continue to grow and provide design services we look forward to partnering with homeowners who find value in a design team dedicated to their project success. We love being guides throughout a process which many clients have never done before and often will only go through once in their lifetime. Building a team of professionals that you trust and have clear open communication with is the key to a smooth process, and we are honored to be able to serve our clients in this way.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, this list could be a real mile long, because we truly love this city and everything it has to offer.
Here are some neighborhood specific spots for food and drink we love:
Highlands – Wildflower
City Park – Sap Sua
RiNo – Hop Alley
Platt Park – Park Burger
Congress Park – Blue Pan Pizza
Park Hill – Dang Soft Serve
Skyland – The Plymoth
Berkeley – Bakery Four
Aurora – Anette at the Stanley Marketplace
Five Points – Rosenberg’s Bagels
Cheeseman Park – Copper Door Coffee at the Botanic Gardens
Wash Park – Senior Bear
Looking for something to do, here’s where you can find us:
Catch a show at the High Dive, Head to the Clifford Still Museum (don’t just take in the art – this building is phenomenal!), In the summer checkout the farmers market on Pearl Street or the Cherry Creek Arts Festival.
We love the Denver Botanic gardens with holiday lights in the winter or their concert series in the summer. And if you’re lucky, catch a Nuggets Game while you’re in town.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It doesn’t take more than a second to recognize the support that Erin and I have had from our partners from day 1 has been amazing. Ryan and Adam are not only our biggest fans (occasionally to the point of embarrassment), but also our graphic designer, tech team, and general emotional support through all the ups and downs of owning and operating a business.
