We had the good fortune of connecting with Caitlin Rose and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Caitlin, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Work life balance is something that moms don’t just talk about. We walk that tight rope every single day.

For me, before I had my daughters, I was not always the best at balancing the working part of my life with all the other pieces. Particularly in agency culture, a lot of times working more hours than everyone else is a point of pride. Busyness leads to business. But it also leads to burnout.

When I decided to start my own business, I knew that I was going to prioritize life over work (I also see the enormous privilege that I have to be able to do that in this phase of our lives), I wanted to be there for my girls, and inspire them that women can be anything they want to be, which usually is more than just one thing. I can be their mom, and a writer, and pitch top tier media, and get results for my clients.

I choose clients that understand my need to be flexible. I don’t do a lot of meetings. Sometimes I send emails on the weekends or after hours when I have more back up. The difference is that now I do that because that’s usually when I work the most, not because I am trying to prove how much I’m working. My clients enjoy working with me because I am very efficient and I don’t waste a lot of time. I just don’t have enough to waste! I am seasoned enough to work quickly and deliver on time.

Sometimes I still miss a fun run or sign up my four year old for 93 summer camps so I can squeeze in some extra work. But I am proud to have created something that gives me and my family the time and balance that works best for us.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Caitlin Rose Writes combines my PR acumen, writing chops and aspirations to publish children’s picture books. After spending more than a decade in agencies, I’ve developed a unique set of skills spanning copywriting, strategy, public relations, and client relations. I started my original business after having my first daughter in 2019 but it was created quickly in a postpartum haze, without a lot of thought or strategy put into it. Caitlin Rose Writes was formed much more intentionally to bring together what I really excel in and what I really love. I’ve learned so much about what it takes to run a business as a one-woman shop. It’s not always easy but it’s so worth it. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned, and am still working on, is saying no. When you work for yourself, it’s so hard to turn down business but I’m trying to be more selective and take on clients that I am passionate about and know I can deliver great results for.

I want the world to know that I’m a storyteller at heart and telling other’s stories is my very favorite thing to do. You have a story to tell, I can help you.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a unicorn… a Denver native! There are so many gems in our city and I love showing it off. Now, it definitely depends if the kids are along for the ride but our must visit spots would definitely be My Brother’s Bar for JCBs, Sushi Den, and the plimoth for a fancy dinner. I love the brewery scene and would want to take them to the Breckenridge Farmhouse and Mockery brewing. If we’re in the mood for wine, I love Carboy.

The Zoo and Clyfford Still Museum are two of my favorite places to spend an afternoon, with or without kids. The Clyfford Still Museum is such a beautiful, inspiring space and I love the scale of the paintings and focus on just one artist. I’ve loved Denver Zoo since I was a kid. There’s always something new to see and no two trips are exactly the same.

There are also so many great day trips into the high country from Denver. It’s fun to go for a walk around Idaho Springs, grab lunch and shop in the quirky stores or go a little further into Georgetown to ride the train. Vail is my favorite mountain town and we spend a week there every summer enjoying the Betty Ford gardens and park, playing in the Gore River, eating all the delicious things, and just soaking in the sunshine and fresh mountain air.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am eternally grateful to my husband, Nick Wilson, for helping us find a way for me to start my own business and be home with our daughters.

I also owe a shoutout to my parents for supporting me, encouraging my love of arts and culture, and often babysitting last-minute.

I have worked with so many amazing creatives and strategic powerhouses and am grateful for all I’ve learned from them, especially Nicole Locken who created my beautiful branding and has been a cheerleader for me for more than a decade.
