We had the good fortune of connecting with Cameron Hamilton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cameron, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
In my life I have never considered taking risks to be a negative. I consider risks to simply be unknowns. when you approach things with curiosity and focus on process rather than outcome, you eliminate most of the perceived risk. I went to Cosmetology school on a whim because I thought salons were magical places, not because I knew I would be good at it. That risk has become a meaningful career with longevity, success and community I could have never predicted. I think the biggest risk is assuming that you can control or predict with certainty the outcome of any situation. My ability to reframe the idea of what risk is has created endless opportunities and connections I would not have experienced if I was shut down by fear.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have been a hairstylist in Denver for 18 years and I have endless gratitude for the art of hair and the community it has created for me. Getting to be a part of peoples lives and be trusted with so much is very special to me. I can’t believe I get to create beautiful hair all day and get paid for it! I love the details of creating personalized hair color and cuts that can change a persons whole energy. I find it challenging, meaningful and extremely fun. My hope is that people find they can truly collaborate with me and fully express who they are with their hair and live out all of their hair dreams. In our fast moving world I like to provide consistency, and add value to people who chose me to do their hair. I am always learning and love to try new things. I am grateful to contribute beauty to the world.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my friend were coming to Denver I would take them to El Chingon for the best vibe and mexican food, catch a show at the Bluebird Theatre on Colfax, and do karaoke and have cheap drinks at Charlie Browns. Exploring shops and food on south Broadway is always a fun day. Downtown Englewood is coming up with great food like Zomo and Fellow Traveler as well as cool shops like Fancy Tiger and of course the salon I work at Arrow Beauty Denver. Wax Trax records is a must and so is Fashion Nation. Since I have young kids it would also include some time at Skate City rollerskating and at many of the beautiful playgrounds the city has to offer.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am fortunate to have always felt a great deal support. My mom, dad, and bother have always celebrated who I am and made me feel like I was someone worth taking up space. My husband supports my success and non conventional ways daily. My first mentors in the hair world Gina Martinez, Tina Quintana and Tara Nalty took me into their worlds, shared their talents and cheered me on as I developed my own. My clients for 18 years have made my days so joyful and special and motivate me to always do better and grow. I also go back to the book: The Freedom Manifesto by Tom Hodgkinson when I need some perspective and my new favorite inspiration book is: The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Ruben. The ever changing soundtrack of my life from Madonna, Black Flag, De La Soul, The Smiths, Lucero to Jawbreaker will always provide meaning and motivation to my life.
