We had the good fortune of connecting with Carlos Zapata and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carlos, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Seeing others derive joy from my art is a soul-stirring experience that fills me with an immense sense of purpose and fulfillment. Witnessing the way my creations resonate with people, evoke emotions, and perhaps even touch their hearts in ways I couldn’t have imagined, is a profound validation of my craft. It’s the pure, unadulterated connection forged through art that fuels my passion—the ability to transport someone to a different realm, evoke laughter, tears, or simply bring a moment of respite in their lives. Knowing that my art contributes to their happiness is a deeply humbling and immensely gratifying feeling that drives me to keep creating and sharing.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My love for art has been a lifelong affair, stemming from a creative spark ignited within me at a tender age. From my early years, I delved into the world of art, initially expressing myself through street art during my teens and gradually transitioning into more practical forms as I matured. However, this journey was often fraught with self-doubt—questions lingering about whether my creations would resonate with others, whether they would be appreciated.

There were moments when criticism pierced through my confidence, echoing sentiments of inadequacy or insufficiency in my work. Such instances became a battleground for my determination, tempting me to surrender, to let go of my passion. Yet, the sheer emotion art evoked within me was a force too strong to ignore. Despite setbacks, I always found myself returning to the canvas because of the profound joy and fulfillment it brought into my life.

The struggle wasn’t merely about gaining external validation; it was about the raw emotion, the unfiltered connection that art forged between my soul and the world. I held onto the belief that amidst the criticisms, there would be that one person who would truly appreciate and resonate with my creations. For me, that single recognition held more weight than any applause or accolades—it was the ultimate validation of my artistic journey.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Reconnecting with my old friend fills me with immense excitement! It’s like time hasn’t skipped a beat for us. We’d eagerly revisit our favorite spots on Capitol Hill and wander through our cherished stomping grounds, reliving the nostalgia of our glory days. A pilgrimage to Wax Trax for some tunes, strolling down South Broadway in search of books, and revisiting old restaurants that hold a trove of memories—each spot a treasure trove of stories waiting to be retold.

Ah, reminiscing over the dive bar vibe at Don’s Mixed Drinks and revisiting our other haunts like Marlowe’s and the Paramount Cafe would be pure bliss. Though we’d feel a pang of sadness about Racines and Bennys being gone, we’d enthusiastically reminisce about their phenomenal food and drinks.

The thought of reuniting and retracing our steps through these cherished places fills me with uncontainable joy! It’s as if the past is within arm’s reach, waiting for us to dive back into those cherished memories together.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My gratitude for my mother, Mary Jane, and my wife, Britt, knows no bounds. They are the anchors that have steadied my ship through life’s stormy seas. My mother, with her unwavering support and boundless love, instilled in me the courage to dream and the resilience to chase those dreams relentlessly. Her sacrifices and nurturing spirit sculpted the very core of my being.

Britt, my life partner, is the unwavering beacon of unwavering support and encouragement. Her belief in my potential, even when I doubted myself, propelled me to take risks and leap into the unknown. Her unwavering belief in me gave me the courage to embrace opportunities that led to growth, both personally and professionally.

Without the love, guidance, and unwavering support of these extraordinary women, I wouldn’t have had the courage to venture into uncharted territories or embrace the full spectrum of life’s opportunities. They have shaped the person I am today, and for that, I’m eternally grateful.
