We had the good fortune of connecting with Chloe Potter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chloe, why did you pursue a creative career?
Growing up in an artistic family, I was constantly surrounded by inspiring music, art, theatre- and I knew from a young age that I also had an instinctive, artistic drive in me, and the need to say something through my photographs. I was also interested in psychology, but after starting to study it Bard college, I realized that I could also explore related topics through my art work, and that is where my strength was.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I ‘ve heard that what people appreciate about my art is that I don’t follow trends, or consider what might sell, or what people want to see- I try and keep that out of my mind and just do what I feel. I’m inspired by my dreams, films, reading, and what I observe in every day life- how we relate to each other and the world around us, how we fit into nature, or clash with it. I’m proud that I was able to create images which others can feel inspired by, enjoy to look at, and want to hang on their walls- without trying to please anyone, and just following my vision. It was not easy- it took a lot of time and focus to be able to produce series of images which I feel good about and want to exhibit. It took networking of coarse, and not being afraid of failing. I think that’s an important lesson I learned- to not be afraid, and to take risks- not to give up!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take my best friend to northern Italy, which is really close to Vienna, Austria where I’m currently living. We’d stay somewhere on the coast, where we’d have an ocean view, and we’d go for a big lunch and eat a full menu. Then we’d search for some vintage shops and flea markets. In the afternoon we’d check out some galleries and have a refreshing drink in a crowded, busy area good for people watching. Each day we’d travel somewhere new, check out the architecture and inspiring design, and foliage, and maybe search for some abandoned houses to sneak into and photograph. We’d go to the local alimentari and get some delicious cheeses and artichoke hearts, tomatoes, and make a colorful picnic, then drink some strong coffee. Maybe in the evening we’d do a night walk, with no idea where we were going and just see where we end up.
