Hi Valter, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I grew up in the beautiful countryside of southern Portugal, where my family raised me in a farmhouse filled with traditions of self-sufficiency and respect for nature. Their way of life instilled in me a profound appreciation for the simplicity and purity of living off the land. These early experiences shaped my journey and ultimately inspired the creation of LusitaniaSoaps. Today, our brand embodies these values, crafting artisanal products that honor our heritage while promoting sustainability and wellness for all.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My journey from film studies to web design and eventually founding LusitaniaSoaps has been shaped by a convergence of influences, with my wife playing a pivotal role. More than twenty years ago, she shared her love for Mother Nature and her desire to incorporate more sustainable practices into our lives. Inspired by her passion and driven by our shared values, I embarked on a journey towards greater self-sufficiency and environmental consciousness.

Together, we started growing organic food and experimenting with homemade soap, lip balms, and other personal care products. Her unwavering support and encouragement propelled me forward, even when the transition from the digital world to artisanal soap making presented its challenges.

Through perseverance and a shared commitment to living more sustainably, we overcame obstacles and discovered a deeper connection to the natural world. Along the way, we’ve learned valuable lessons about curiosity, adaptability, and the beauty of simplicity.

What sets LusitaniaSoaps apart is not just our dedication to craftsmanship and sustainability, but also the shared vision that my wife and I bring to the brand. Together, we aim to inspire others to embrace a more mindful and eco-conscious way of living, while honoring the beauty and bounty of Mother Nature.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We love exploring the numerous trails in this picturesque corner of New Jersey, where we’ll picnic in spots filled with cherished memories and share stories. Of course, a day trip to NYC is a must! Despite its noise, walking the High Line is always fascinating. We’ll make time to visit a few museums, And no trip would be complete without indulging in some authentic Portuguese fare at a local restaurant.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to the countless environmental organizations, activists, and individuals who tirelessly work to protect and preserve our natural world. From grassroots movements to global initiatives, their unwavering dedication to sustainability, conservation, and environmental justice inspires me every day. Without their passion and commitment, our planet would not have the advocates it needs to thrive.
