We had the good fortune of connecting with Colleen Kelley & Jennifer James and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Colleen Kelley &, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
When the average person comes into a coaching relationship they are typically expecting something that looks more like Consulting or Mentorship. True coaching should be a sounding board and place of accountability to help that person get from where they are to where they want to be. Coaching in its best form should be something you use to help set and reach specific goals.

On the difference between coaching and consulting/mentorship
Trainer. Mentor. Consultant. Coach. These rolls are often referenced interchangeably, however, they are actually quite different. The first difference is in who carries the responsibility. With a trainer, mentor, or consultant, the client is primarily dependent on the professional for both content and improvement. With a coach, the client carries the bulk of that responsibility themself. The second, and equally important difference is the actual role the professional plays. A trainer is a subject matter expert and conveys knowledge to the client. A mentor is also a subject matter expert and conveys knowledge to the client but it is primarily in the form of experience instead of direct training. A consultant is a subject matter expert who advises the client on very specific areas of their business as determined by the client. A coach, unlike the others, is not necessarily a subject matter expert. A coach’s primary role is to utilize proven coaching models and systems to assist the client in developing their own goals and help them create the environment, support, and accountability necessary to achieve those goals.

Differential Coaching works with agents primarily as coaches, and since both Jen and Colleen are also real estate experts, we can help you with your business as trainers, mentors, or consultants too! If you have questions about how Differential Coaching can help you, shoot us an email at info@differentialcoaching.com or reach out on our contact page.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Colleen’s happy place is on the ski slopes of Summit County in Winter and those mountains for hikes in Summer; she loves sharing her short term rental condo in Breckenridge with all of her visitors. Jen’s favorite places to share with visitors are the quaint locally owned foodie spots around Olde Town Arvada. Her current favorites are Lady Nomada and Stone Cellar Bistro. In the summer she can be found on any given patio hosting awesome brunches or happy hours.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Colleen & Jen are grateful to have many amazing influences in their lives that brought them into the realm of coaching. They found their excitement around coaching in the growth and development of the people around them. Having worked in nearly every facet of Real Estate since 2001, the two of them found the most reward in helping others. Whether they be new to the real estate business, first time home buyers, savvy investors or agents looking to expand and grow their businesses, it was seeing others success that brought them together to create a business where they are rewarded daily by making positive impacts by empowering their clients. They are excited to expand their reach into Business Coaching as well as Executive and Leadership Coaching through Colleen’s membership with the International Coaching Federation and her pursuit of a Graduate Degree in Coaching and Leadership from University of Texas at Dallas.
