We had the good fortune of connecting with Crystal Speier and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Crystal, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?

Originally when I began this journey it was just to have an online presence. I really had no thought of having a store of any kind or making it a business.

I started an Instagram account about 5 years ago as a sort of online “Book of Shadows” sharing my witchy tips, tricks and crystal knowledge. Apparently a lot of other people were looking for what I started posting because my online community feels like it blew up almost overnight!

It was then that I decided I wanted to begin selling some of the handmade products I made, so I revamped an old Etsy store and started off small. Within a year it moved into a website and then after successfully doing well online through COVID, a brick and mortar store a little over a year and a half ago.

I’ve been a solitary practitioner for over 20 years. Instagram felt like a good place to start my digital Book of Shadows. I wanted this to be an online place where I could share my ideas and give others that same opportunity.

I had no intentions of opening a local store, but after COVID, I realized I wanted an in person presence in my community, not just online anymore.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

My online presence such as Instagram, Facebook & YouTube, is where I share my witchy tips, spells & products. After practicing for almost 25 years now, I felt good about sharing and teaching. I also advertise new items that come into the shop, sales, events, as well as the various Healing Modalities I offer.

My website is where I really like to showcase all the things the shop offers. Online shopping & nationwide shipping for all sorts of Witchy and Spiritual Items. As an avid crafter of many things, I make a variety of things myself as well as wholesale items in. I offer Tarot & Oracle card readings online or in person, smoke cleansings, crystal reiki and more. This year I have also begun to offer in person classes, festivals and retreats. All of which are advertised on any given social media account and on the website.

When I opened my brick and mortar in February of 2022 I had secured my first small space of about 200 sqft. Within a month I took a chance and expanded to just under 500 sqft and for my first year worked on expanding my products and finding out if the Pueblo economy was going to work in my favor.

Fast forward to the end of August of 2022 where I found myself in the ER Labor Day weekend where my life would forever change. After a lot of testing, biopsies and scans I was diagnosed with stage IV metastatic breast cancer. It had spread to several different places in my body. How…..why….?? I had just begun this journey of living this new dream only for life to take it away!? No…. I began treatment in October of 2022 and will forever be on some sort of treatment plan. As of now I’ve have had a great response to my first line of treatment. The cancer is dialing back in my body and now, a year later I am still here, living my dream with more determination than ever.

In March of 2023 a much larger space in the same building I began in, fell into my lap. I wasn’t sure I was ready for the expansion, or if I could do this given my new health diagnosis. I just knew I needed more space since more people were looking for tarot and reiki services. I knew I needed to take another chance on myself and do this. It felt right.

I feel like this opportunity was meant to be. As a healer and an empath, being present and having a place to heal and help others along this path means everything now.

I am so thankful everyday for another day to work in my beautiful and magickal store. I have put so much work into making the larger space a truly magickal place to visit. Now I can continue to provide shopping and online tarot readings as well as in person connections for people starting down their witchy path. To give people a safe place to shop, seek advice and have a separate space for any of my healing modalities they may need. This whole journey has been absolutely amazing and I wouldn’t change anything. I am always adding more of my handmade products to the store and have a few local artists featuring some of their items too. It’s truly been a dream come true for me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are some great perks to living in Colorado as there are SO many things to do outdoors. Here are some of the things I would suggest to anyone visiting.

Pueblo
Union Avenue Downtown-Lots of shopping and dining.
Pueblo Reservoir-Fishing, trails, nature center, star gazing, best place to view the sunset in town.
Coors Tavern for the best sloppers.
Passkeys for the best Italian Sausage Sandwich
And if you’re here during harvest, the best green chili in the US at the local farms.

Surrounding Areas
Bishops Castle- A Colorado must!
Manitou Incline-A hike everyone needs to experience.
The Town Of LaVeta, CO. A hidden gem of a little town in my opinion.
Guffy- Another cool hidden town in CO

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This would have never took place if it weren’t for my tribe pushing and reassuring me to take the chance on myself.

My soul sisters, Stephanie & Morgan for always pushing me outside my comfort zone.

My husband Paul for believing in me and what I am doing and helping me get started with my brick and mortar.

And also a huge thanks to my mom, who got me started with crystals and helped fuel this whole passion towards everything metaphysical. She’s my side kick in helping me run this store and local events! Couldn’t do it without her!
