We had the good fortune of connecting with Cynda Brock and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cynda, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I knew i wanted to train horses and teach lessons for a living. When I started this business 24 years ago there were two choices as far as running it; be self employed/own my own business or get paid by a riding facility as an independent contractor.. Today those are still the same choices in this industry as far as how to operate. It’s been a journey learning how to run the business, using resources and constantly updating systems to make it better for the business and the clients. Training the horses and teaching is the easy part.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I grew up on a ranch riding and competing as a child. Overall I have been working with horses for 45 years as a junior rider and then as a professional. When I went to college, my intention was to go into the medical field like my family so I ended up with a biology degree. The good news about education is that I also got experience in Business law, statistics, accounting, marketing and other classes that provided assistance that I eventually used for my business. I was still able to use my biology degree in other ways in the horse industry as well when it came to nutrition, exercise, chemistry, psychology and physics.
I would say the horse industry was under developed and still is today in the world of having a website, legal documents such as contracts, information packets on what you offer to clients in your business and a billing system. It took me about 15 years as a processional until I was able to set up all of these things. I didn’t have the ability or knowledge so I went deeper into the networks of those who could help the business. I realized I wasn’t easy to find other than word of mouth and I didn’t have anything to give new potential clients who wanted to ride.
Now the website is thriving with the use of a marketing team, I use QuickBooks for invoicing and the books with the help of a book keeper. I have a CPA and an attorney to help with taxes and legal documents. The use of social media and YouTube has enhanced the visual interest in my business as well. It’s quite a process to run a business and I couldn’t do it alone, there is also not enough time to cover the workload as well as running the operations part.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would enjoy showing them the different places and spaces in Colorado. Having the mountains, trails, and especially the ranch where I work is an extraordinary view into the outdoors. The Air Force Academy comes to mind for seeing sporting events at the college level at a beautiful location. Professional sporting events in downtown Denver. They are fantastic restaurants down in the Springs off Interquest Parkway, local restaurants in Sedalia too. There is a new Ford amphitheater in the springs that has incredible concerts. You can really fill a week with diverse activities depending on the weather.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents Pat and Bob Brock. I was raised on a horse ranch in Arkansas. This was just a hobby for my parents. Something that they enjoyed. They actually were in the medical world of anesthesia and pharmacy for their main jobs. They always had a heart of an entrepreneur and had side businesses as well as hobbies that supported their love of horses.
