Meet David ‘dov’ Bruyns | owner Muti Music, DJ / Performer as Dov1 / DnA, partner of labels Medicine / Producer Dojo

We had the good fortune of connecting with David ‘dov’ Bruyns and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David ‘Dov’, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I was a back packer who then settled in USA, starting in San Francisco with a weeks accommodation paid upfront and $7 left for meals for the week and hoping to find work in that time. I lived illegally and worked whatever jobs I could for many years before becoming legal and starting to work within my interests more.
I always had some sort of blind faith that if I did something with integrity and honesty, then things would work out. This may not have been the best basis for starting record labels and a business, however it created a faith inside that allowed me to continue with these risky ventures.
I now know that I most certainly would have benefitted from some business couching, however most coaches would have told me to give up or to not invest in many of the artists that I’m forever grateful that I did, even if they were not financially lucrative, the relationships and experiences have been immeasurable.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My original art was initially creating a bass music record label that promoted an eclectic sort of sound in a time when very few people tried to. I also brought expertise in indie dance music distribution at the time, that few people had the will to navigate. My music making followed as Dov1 and DnA and has led to many incredible travels around the world and making lifelong friendships with some incredible creative people and the people who help thme be who they are.
Major lessons have been:
– it’s not always the person who brings the most education / talent to the table, more often it’s the people who just keep working at it, that succeed.
– fans enjoy following the journey of creators, not just one piece of perfect music / art.
– Muti Music is my brand before my artist name or music, as it is a collection of relationships as much as it is a selection of music. I truly feel the labels sound has consistently reflected a high quality of ongoing diversity in bass music and emerging bass music genres. We’ve also worked with a massive amount of the names that are now seen as successful in the global boutique festival culture. I feel our home as a sound is in boutique, art driven festivals.
As Dov1, I hope to continue to DJ and perform quality beats that make people dance. Just being able to get people to let go and free themselves through dance is incredibly rewarding.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well I’ve just moved from San Francisco where I’ve been based for over 20 years, to Nevada City. So the beautiful sites of the city, the parks, the awesome eateries and amazing neighborhood cultures are now replaced with forests, lakes and rivers, great hiking, mountain biking and gardening at home. The town of Nevada City is vibrant and I could entertain / host a visitor with activities and restaurants for days, even just between two of the streets in town (Broad St and Commercial).

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ll give a Shoutout to my friends and sometimes partners in ventures, Adam Ohana AKA An-ten-nae and Darin McFadyen AKA FreQ Nasty. Both have been a large part of my journey for over 20 years and I’ve been blessed to live and work alongside their integrity and quality of friendship.
