We had the good fortune of connecting with Dawn Bower and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dawn, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I think for a long time, I had wanted the freedom to make my own work schedule and work for myself. I had dabbled in different network marketing companies since around 2006. Most of them didn’t make enough to pay the bills. One of them became very lucrative very quickly, but I wasn’t passionate enough about it to take on the challenge to keep it there. But really, I wasn’t planning on starting my own coaching business until it just made sense that it was the next step for me. I was getting coached myself, using NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming), and it changed every facet of my life. After two years, it just made sense to get certified myself so that I could help others have similar experiences in their lives. I just really wanted to help people. And once I started coaching, the referrals just took off!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
How did I get here? Well, I went to college without much of an idea of what I wanted to do. I always enjoyed entertaining people and I also loved learning. So, I took as many classes as possible and left with a degree in Education. I have taught in some capacity for about 20 years. Some was full time in the classroom, working with kids with learning differences. Some was one-on-one and small group tutoring from ages pre-K to post high school. I am also an actress and a member of SAG-AFTRA. I am certified as an NLP Practitioner and soon to be a license Spiritual Practitioner of Religious Science. And here I am. But none of that really tells the story of how I got here. Those are just degrees, certifications and licenses. How I got here had more to do with following what called to me. The university I went to, Creighton University, was a last minute decision; it called to me in some way. And there, I was able to explore theology, philosophy and psychology in a way I never had before. Joining AmeriCorps*NCCC, which brought me to Denver, called me to serve my country. While in Denver, I was called to take up Lindy Hop Swing Dancing, which is how I met my husband. The call to perform never left me and I started to answer that call in a bigger way. Through meditation and classes at Mile Hi Church, I realized that I really wanted to go to LA after my divorce. Then, I was called to leave LA a few years later; even though I was doing well acting/comedy wise, other doors were closing. Another rough breakup and financial struggles still lingering from the divorce, led me to find something to fix all my “problems.” I was called to sign up for this weekend conference led my George Carroll, who became my NLP Coach. And one thing led to another. I just keep following the calling. And I have a strong sense that I’m not done yet. I haven’t reached the end. There is more for me. I just have to listen to what is calling me next. And I’ve noticed that it’s always a little higher than before.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am fascinated by all the parks in the city. I would definitely take my friend on a walk around Sloan’s Lake; I love how you have a wonderful view of the mountains on one side and the city on the other. Plus, looking at all the wildlife is so interesting. We would possibly walk across the street and grab a meal at Ohana Grill because Hawaiian food sounds amazing, right? We might have to go to Wash Park and bike around, then stop for a latte at Wash Perk. Perhaps we would go up to Evergreen and paddle board on the lake. Afterwards, we might check out the consignment stores and then eat and grab a drink while listening to live music at Cactus Jack’s. We definitely need to go to a Rockies Game and check out all the new places in Lo-Do. I’m sure we’d find a hike from the MANY in the area and maybe share some wine one evening at Lookout Mountain.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Gosh, so many people to shoutout! My first teachers would have to be my family. Without them, I wouldn’t have all the beginnings of lessons introduced to me and the unconditional love taught to me. Next, I’d like to shoutout all of my exes. Thank you for being my mirrors and helping me grow as a person. Without the challenges and the love, I wouldn’t be the human I am today. A HUGE shoutout to George Carroll, my NLP Coach. His no-nonsense approach, shook me out of my blaming, pity party and helped me to acknowledge my part in my life. With him, I was able to eliminate patterns and create new ones. I was able to see situations from different perspectives and really understand how I am creating my reality. My business coach, Celeste O’Brien, is the perfect balance of heart and head and has helped me transition my business to the next level. My spiritual community at Mile Hi Church is SO important to me. Being reminded of my grounding in Spirit helps make everything else possible. I’d also like to shoutout the coaches who collaborate with me through Mobile Lighthouse and my sister, Erahn Martin, who has joined with me as my assistant. Our relationship is a true testament to the power of NLP. I love you all.
