We had the good fortune of connecting with Truman Adams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Truman, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Working for someone else helps their dream come true. I prefer to work on my own dreams. When I graduated art school in 2000 I was a mural assistant getting paid $8 an hour and my boss was charging $100 an hour for the work I did. I learned quite a bit before quitting after 6 months. I then started my own projects mostly high-end oil portraits where I was making $50 an hour at my own schedule. I am now up to $150-$250 an hour.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a kid I made a vow to myself to make my living only from art and refused the idea of failure. There is no such thing as failure only lessons learned, and every lesson makes me better at what I do. I trust in the process and know that great projects are always manifesting even if I don’t know when, where or how. For me the whole process is a mystical experience and the work that comes is based on the beliefs I have, the thoughts I think and the story I tell myself. It’s all about flowing with life and recognizing opportunity. My art is my purpose on this earth and what I enjoy doing most. When painting time dissolves and I can truly be in the moment.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The Sarasota Chalk Festival has been huge influence on my career. All the artists I have met through the festival since 2009 have inspired me in so many ways. Having a community of artists and seeing how they go through similar struggles and successes is humbling.
