We had the good fortune of connecting with Denise Woodward and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Denise, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
That life can change any minute, and you need to practice patience as well as be flexible. Easier to make the changes needed to keep your business going when you practice running it with an open mind.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I studied film photography in my twenties, primarily black and white which was my first love. I enjoyed being able to develop and make prints using my hands. It took a few years after digital became a thing to give in to it, and I struggled making the transition over.

I am primarily self-taught with digital and find that practice makes perfect. It is easier to just shoot when you do not have to worry about the cost of developing film so that is one perk. I occasionally take photography workshops in areas of interest such as food or travel/landscape.

I feel it is good to always be learning especially from other photographers you admire. Everyone looks at the world and light definitely. Fresh eyes help us grow as photographers. There isn’t one right way when you are a creative, it is more about what moves you and inspires you.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is a hard one as there are so many great spots to visit.

Sights that are a must in the Bay Area are definitely the drive across the Golden Gate Bridge into Marin County, then up to the Headlands for amazing city views especially on a clear day. Twin Peaks for more great views of downtown San Francisco as well as the East Bay. Golden Gate Park on the weekend when the roads are closed for walking, biking and listening to music in the summer, with an added drive through the famed Haight Ashby. It is fun to grab picnic supplies from Bri-Rite Market and then hang out at Dolores Park to people watch, or grab an ice cream from Bri Rite Creamery if that is more your speed.

Love taking visitors out to the coast of Marin County for oysters at Marshall Store which is my favorite spot as it has great views as well as fantastic oysters with amazing garlic bread served on the side.

You cannot come to San Francisco without a ride on a Cable Car to either Fisherman’s Wharf or Ghirardelli Square, both seem touristy but always are fun. If you go to Ghirardelli Square you have to grab an Irish Coffee at the Buena Vista as it is San Francisco icon.

San Francisco is a favorite for those who love food. A few favorite spots of mine are:

Seafood: Tadich Grill – great spot for local seafood dishes, also icon to San Francisco.

Oysters: Hog Island at the Ferry Plaza is always a fun spot to go.

Breakfast: Not fancy but fun location is Red’s Java House, it is a working man’s breakfast but solid. They also have a good burger with garlic fries for lunch.

Thai: Kin Khao is my favorite spot as the dishes are not typical of what you find at most Thai spots in the states, the dishes here are full of flavor and innovative.

Mexican Food: San Francisco has the best Mexican food outside of Mexico and La Taqueria has been serving up great dishes since 1973. San Jalisco also serves a great Mexican breakfast.

Wine Bar: Buddy’s Lounge, recently discovered and have to say it was one of my most memorable experiences in the past year. Great wine selection and the food was outstanding.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My life-partner, Lenny, he is my biggest cheerleader. Whenever I set my mind to doing something for personal growth or career-wise he is right there cheering me on. Constantly saying how proud he is of me for taking the chance and for doing what makes me happy.
