We had the good fortune of connecting with Devan Fechner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Devan, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
It really came about naturally, I made a bit of a name for myself in the music scene in Colorado and had a few people come to me for tech work while I was still living in Colorado Springs and began putting myself out there for teaching lessons, mostly through word of mouth, I got more referral and it started going from there! I registered my LLC while it was a dollar to do so, my friend Trent from Sinister Star made my logo and website for me and DFGS was born.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started my music journey way back in 2006 and it’s always been a massive part of my life. It was really only on the back burner while I was in the military and really too busy to do much other than noodle whenever I found a spare moment. But since 2019 I am super proud to have found a place in 5 very different bands with different circumstances, one of which is playing Maryland Death Fest in 2024, probably the biggest extreme metal fest in the US. The music industry is super difficult no matter what aspect you choose to focus on, but the bands all have a very DIY attitude and that approach has definitely helped with just putting my head down and grinding and pushing for growth.
It has been and will continue to take passion and patience but it certainly worth it.
As far what I would like to share about DFGS, I take the most pride in the quality of my work and what to make clients as passionate about music as I am. For repairs, my goal upon delivering an instrument back is to see that spark in your eye as soon as you start playing a fresh guitar. For lessons, I love seeing students progressing and applying what they learn into their own art. It’s so rewarding and creates a positive feedback loop that makes me want to continue pushing my own abilities.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Black Sky Brewery is a must! They are all amazing people there, great beer, pizza and music – and they’re massive supporters of local music. I also love Trve Brewing/Music City Hot Chicken, Brütal Poodle and the poutine at The Crypt is insanity.
Denver is incredibly fortunate to have so many venues as well, there are always good shows to get to – Oriental, Roxy, HQ, Hi Dive and Trailside are the venues I find myself at the most.
Outside of music I’m a homebody so my favorite thing to do is host a big BBQ at the house for friends!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Definitely want to thank my band mates in Crotalus and Chamber Mage and the other guitarists in the Colorado metal scene who have put enough trust in me to work on some of their most prized possessions. Another big shout out goes to Adam and Maria over at FU-Tone, I am super honored to have a great working relationship with them as well.
Lastly to Kevin Rodela, an incredible luthier based out of Colorado Springs for being a wealth of knowledge and inspiration for me giving this a shot.
