We had the good fortune of connecting with DNA Picasso and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DNA, how do you think about risk?
Risk taking is everything, but I’m not talking about walking a tight rope over Manhattan’s streets without falling for a big pay day. I don’t take those types of risks. That doesn’t mean YOU shouldn’t take those types of risks, though. I prefer to risks on myself. I left college, my scholarship and track team to pursue music. For me, risk taking is a combination of a few things; getting uncomfortable, facing fear and truly believing in yourself. You cannot grow in your comfort zone, you just can’t. Fear doesn’t help a single situation unless you’re trying to get away form a predator and even then, you’d have to consider yourself prey. Believing in yourself is major but with this, you have to invest in yourself and work hard for what you want. Risk taking has done a lot for my career and taken me to the nations meccas of Hip-Hop. Sometimes taking a risk can be as simple as picking up the phone to make that call or going to that event this weekend to network. The outcome of even simple risk taking can be the difference between night and day. Bet on you. I bet on me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My name is DNA Picasso because I definitely draw influence from Pablo Picasso and the way he created. What sets me apart from other artists is versatility and totality. I express almost every part of myself on record and my approach depends on mood. Unlike artists who tend to run towards one style that works, my mood doesn’t accommodate that all the time so I go off of vibes. On an album, you may hear a hard hitting trap record, next to an R&B record. My style will keep you on your toes while it’s still authentically me, even when it’s a topic I’ve never discussed before. I’ve gotten to where I’m at today by being relentless and innovative, To adapt with the times but remain you is a challenge but at the same, when you know yourself, it doesn’t matter where you go. Nothing about this process is or was easy but it’s worth it. I don’t have an overarching answer for how to deal with challenges, it truly is case to case. Sometimes the way you overcome challenge has to adapt but in general, don’t give up and if something isn’t working switch it up. I’ve learned many lessons along the way and I continue to learn daily. I want the world to know that I represent everybody who was told they couldn’t do something. I represent everyone who’s idea was every laughed at. I speak up for the ones who can’t. I tell my story for the one’s who relate.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’d be in the studio 80% of the time, door dashing Hapa Sushi, Del Friscos and smoking the finest cannabis.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to shoutout anyone who’s believed in me during this process. If you’re reading this, thank you. There’s too many people to name them all in this interview but I wouldn’t have come this far without people in my corner, At first I thought I could do it on my own but that’s just not true at all; a team is major.
