We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Cassidy Preston and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Cassidy, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?

I’ve done my best to surround myself with great mentors and supportive friends. Leaning on others in the early days provided me with essential guidance and strength. I still lean on others outside of my team. As the founder and the ‘boss’ I find it important to have an outside group that can help guide me and give me perspective.

The other big habit that has helped our business scale over the past couple of years is the simple routines of setting the top priority for each quarter then breaking down the projects or road map to achieving that priority. Learning how to be disciplined in saying ‘no’ to taking on too much has probably been the most important skill or habit for me.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

I think the first year of starting this business – now a firm of Mental Performance Coaches called CEP Mindset – was the biggest challenge. I remember people asking me “what if being a full-time Mental Performance Coach doesn’t work out?” This would strengthen the seeds of doubt I had but I remember drawing on the conviction that it wasn’t a matter if it would work, but a matter of when. That I was committed to doing what I could and learning from the failures. Sure enough it took about 9 months of grinding with little success – but then things started to take off!

From a values perspective – I’ve always been about being progressive in the strategies we use with our clients (elite athletes & business professionals) – we have focused on finding the most effective and efficient ways to get our clients results and NOT just relied on the standard sport psychology and mental performance practices.

The second big value that drives our business is about being a streamlined team and service delivery. We have constantly innovated as a business to find ways to simply the sales and delivery process.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve got two young daughters so I don’t get out much these days. But in the summer I enjoy going golfing – the Nest up north of Toronto is nice course I went to recently. Locally, I enjoy going out for some Italian food at Joia in Newmarket. Lastly, checking out an NHL game and watching the Leafs is always a good time.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe a lot of credit to my uncle – Dr. Tom Preston who helped me get this business going from scratch. Also, Todd Herman has been invaluable to help me to continue to scale and bring the vision to fruition. My parents also gave me plenty of opportunity to learn through my schooling but also world leading experts like Dr. John Demartini and T. Harv Eker. Lastly, my wife, Emily, has been so supportive of me as I’ve built this business.
