We had the good fortune of connecting with Dylan Ochala and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dylan, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of Tectonic Builds is our commitment to innovation with integrity and staying humble. We believe that luxury should not be at odds with sustainability, and this philosophy has driven every decision we’ve made. By consistently pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in high-performance home design, while staying true to our core values, we’ve created a brand that resonates with clients who care about both the environment and exceptional quality. It’s this alignment of purpose and practice that has been the cornerstone of our success.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Tectonic Builds is more than just a design-build firm; it’s a vision of what modern luxury living should be. What sets us apart is our unwavering commitment to sustainability without compromising on luxury or aesthetic appeal. We pride ourselves on creating homes that are not only stunning but also high-performance, through passive house principles to ensure energy efficiency and environmental responsibility. The journey to where we are today wasn’t easy—navigating the challenges of balance: work life balance and design innovation with sustainability required a relentless pursuit of excellence. Overcoming these challenges has taught us that integrity and innovation are at the heart of our success. We’re proud of the projects we’ve built, each one a testament to our belief that luxury and sustainability can coexist beautifully. Our brand story is about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in residential design, shifting the norm and creating homes that are as enduring as they are exquisite.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting Boulder, I’d want them to experience the perfect blend of nature, culture, and culinary delights that this city offers. We’d start our mornings with a hike up the Sunshine Canyon to catch breathtaking views. For breakfast, we’d grab a farm-to-table meal at The Kitchen, where the food is as fresh as it is delicious. Our afternoons would be a mix of time spent between exploring the Pearl Street Mall, checking out local boutiques, street performers, and grabbing a coffee at Belize Coffee mixed with some river hangs. We’d also visit the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art and stroll about CU Boulder campus. For dinner, we’d dine at Flagstaff House, savoring gourmet dishes while overlooking the city lights. Throughout the week, we’d make time to visit nearby attractions like the Celestial Seasonings Tea Factory, the Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse, and Chautauqua Park. Evenings would be spent at local breweries like Avery Brewing Company, where we could enjoy craft beers in a relaxed atmosphere. Boulder’s vibrant mix of outdoor adventures, cultural experiences, and incredible food scene would ensure an unforgettable week.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Success is never a solo journey, and at Tectonic Design Build, we’ve been fortunate to have incredible support along the way. I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to our dedicated team and the clients who have trusted us with their visions. Especially Kelsie, my incredible partner and wife. A special recognition goes to our local partners and craftspeople whose expertise and passion for their work have been instrumental in bringing our designs to life. I’d also like to acknowledge the sustainable design community (CGBG & GFDA) that has inspired us to continually push the envelope in green building practices. And, of course, to the Boulder community, whose commitment to environmental stewardship has fueled our own passion for sustainable living—thank you.
