We had the good fortune of connecting with E J Carr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi E J, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Good Question. At the time I actually wasn’t thinking that I was starting a business. All I wanted to do was create images and get paid. It was sort of a, one shoot at a time. Make some money. get some exposure and recognition and strokes. It started to be a business when the shoots started to get bigger, more production, bigger team of support.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always loved just jumping into a project. Once I have all of the pieces to make it happen, ie; production, I love the process of showing up at a location and makeing it happen on the spot. Typically, that would be an editorial assignment. either, portrait, music, fashion. I find inspiration from everything around me most of the time. I try not to copy what inspires me, ie: visually. but to take off from that place and make my own.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I think all of the people that believed in me along the way. Art directors, fashion directors,Magazine editors, Artists (musicians, actors, etc). I thank them all for trusting me with the projects they awarded to me to shoot for them. Thank them. I’d like to include the inspiration I received from so many….those who came before me and showed me the way thru their imagery…. Avedon, Stern, Penn, Skrebneski, from the fashion world. Warhol, Ritts, Lucka, Turner, Weston, Steichen…..The list is extensive.
