We had the good fortune of connecting with Engenius Beatz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Engenius, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Well, I believe risks are necessary, although uncomfortable. Getting to a greater position in life comes with a level of risk, but if we never take it, we will remain stagnant in the same place. I’ve experienced some of my greatest blessings because I was willing to take the risk for something different. I released my first single, featuring my now-wife, which was a risk because I didn’t see myself as an artist, just a musician and producer, but I did. My single “Prayed Up” by Engenius Beatz ft. Just Danielle is on its way to 1 million streams!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe what sets me apart from others is my story. My childhood was rather tough, so I didn’t grow up in a house filled with instruments, singing, or musicians; however, I was always drawn to musical instruments, making melodies and beats with my mouth that I had heard in my head since I was young. I never understood why I had this slight obsession and interest with music and making sounds until I got a bit older and found out my mother and late father were musicians in their younger years. My mother was a singer in her younger years, and my father was a piano/guitar player before passing. It always felt like the gift of music was there; it just needed to be a catalyst to awaken what was dormant in me. I am most proud of my growth in music and songwriting over the years. I am self-taught, so to see that the gifts that I have been given have been honed and developed to a place where they impact and bless others is amazing to see. The journey of a creative is one of the wildest roller coasters you can ride. Some days you feel like you’re making the best content you’ve ever created, and other days you wonder if you still have it or if it’s worth your time. What keeps me grounded in those seasons is just finding new and different sources of inspiration, new artists, and new music that makes me fall in love with the feeling good music gives. I go back and listen to my older compositions a lot because it shows the amount of growth that has taken place over the years and keeps me focused. One thing I want people to know about my brand is that I am a continued student of music, audio, and songwriting. I love it enough to be forever learning to be better and more impactful with the gifts I have been given. I do it because I love it, but when it helps or impacts other people, I love it even more.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, being the avid music lover I am, we would go to see live music with great food at the Bethesda Theater or perhaps a live comedy show at the comedy factory. I love a good standup routine, as I love to laugh and believe laughter is medicine. We all should do more laughing, lol. We could take a trip to Wonderfly Arena, which is an amazing arcade for adults. They have fun games like dodgebow, bumper-ball soccer, classic video games, and VR. If they are fans of seafood, we could visit Costas Inn for some delicious dining; their stuffed salmon is amazing. I like to play pool; however, I’m not very good. We could visit Fish Head Cantina for some cheesteak tacos and games of pool. I like to visit this place here called Main Event; it’s like Dave & Busters with more options. They have laser tag, bowling (now I’m good at bowling), and some really fun arcade games. Being the movie buff that I am, depending on the films in the theater, we could even catch a great movie during our time here before leaving.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would be remiss if I didn’t shout out my loving and supportive wife, Just Danielle, who is an uber-gifted music artist herself. I would also like to shout out my awesome church community, Life Vision Church Baltimore, led by our amazing Pastor Sherry Grant. Livfevision has always been a place of genuine love, support, and encouragement.
