We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelsey & Kara Breitung and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelsey & Kara, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
One thing that outsiders out of our industry may not realize is that there are widely different approaches to CBD oil extraction. Most companies use a solvent to quickly blast out the CBD oil and then rely on evaporation for the solvents to go away. This method is usually done by a machine that fills up an entire room and requires someone with hazardous materials certification to run it with the leftover material needing to be disposed of in a special way. We do not think this is not how a health product should be made and would never use a solvent that breaks down oils to then try and extract and preserve those same oils; this just doesn’t make sense to us. In a sea of CBD companies, what sets Farmhouse Hemp apart from the rest is that we extract our oil just using heat and pressure. At Farmhouse Hemp we take our hemp flower and just press the oil out; this pressing method creates what is called Rosin. We take the rosin and blend it into our honey, candy, salves, lip balm (which is seriously the best lip balm ever), and hemp drops for people. After the hemp is pressed we have what we call hemp “tiles” leftover which still have CBD in them. There have been no solvents added to our extraction process so we are able to then take our “tiles” and cook them in MCT oil to create our pet drops and close our own loop to use all of the available CBD in the flower. These pet drops have given pet after pet (per pet owners) a new lease on life in their older age.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Sustainability has always been important to us, our previous jobs focused on event sustainability and how to simply produce less waste while dealing with the growing footprint of events of all kinds. We saw this CBD wave coming and wanted to start our own company that we could have control over and decide how we made our oil, this is how Farmhouse Hemp was born. We wanted to be able to start small and work our way up while being more hands-on with our products we make. We are vertically integrated; growing our own hemp, processing that in-house, designing our labels, bottling, and shipping out direct to you. We have learned that being in control from start to finish is the only way to truly know what has gone into that product and how good it really is. We are small but we are mighty…we are Farmhouse Hemp.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have a friend visiting soon. This will be a good brainstorming session of where I should take her. Up the Poudre is the #1 go to! We’ll either go for a hike or go way up the Poudre and do some snowshoeing (she’s from AL so that will be fun to see some snow). Michigan Ditch is one of my favorite places. Then we could hit the Mish on the way back down for dinner. Wandering around Old Town is always fun. One of my favorites places to stop in is Dandelions & Rust. We could grab lunch at 415. My favorite place to see music in Fort Collins (in the winter) is Washingtons! So hitting a show there would have to be on the list too. We could do dinner at Penrose before the show. We live in Laporte so Vern’s, Me Oh My, and Laporte Pizza are always good go to’s. Can’t forget a show at Swing Station too!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to John Long who gave us free material to play around with in 2016 to see if it was even possible to create CBD Rosin products. John Long was a community advocate for hemp and sustainability. His passion ignited a fire of inspiration throughout Fort Collins for many business owners. He was definitely an influential player in the CBD industry here in Fort Collins and we will always be thankful for his generosity.
