Meet Kristy Baker | Motherhood & Family Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristy Baker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristy, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have chosen to pursue a creative career path simply because it makes me feel more alive. I have never felt like I fit into a social box and in doing my photography I am able to have an artistic outlet to express myself. My photography has paved a way for me to think outside the box. I am constantly learning and trying new things. Another reason I have chosen to pursue photography is because my art allows me to serve others, which I feel is very important.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Something I want others to know about me and my photography is that I don’t need or want perfection. I use a storytelling approach to my photography and I aim to capture real moments, wether they are soft and tender or intricate and chaotic. It is okay to show up just as you are, as long as you just show up. I am proud of the fact that many of my clients have become friends simply because they have trusted my vision. For most people, being in front of the camera is not always easy, and yet it is essential to feel comfortable. It is my honor to instill confidence and ease to all of the people I work with. I have learned along my photography journey that it is a true joy of mine to help others feel seen and valued. I have gotten to where I am today by putting effort into serving others, empathetically understanding where my clients are coming from, and visually telling their story. Documenting life is a precious thing and I will never take it for granted.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live a few hours from Denver in a town called Steamboat Springs. It is dubbed ‘Ski Town USA’ and has produced 100 winter Olympians. However, in addition to all of its winter success, it is an amazing place in the spring/summer/fall. I personally enjoy the summer the most. If someone were to visit during the summer, I’d recommend going to breakfast at Creekside Cafe or Freshies where you can eat outside under colorful umbrellas, then maybe peruse through the Farmers Market, visit the Yampa River Botanical Gardens, go for a walk on the core trail, or tube down the Yampa River. I’d recommend lunch or dinner at Noodles Saigon Cafe, possibly followed up by some ice cream cones at Lyon’s Drug or a milkshake at Johnny B. Goods. Something that is worth checking out is Steamboat’s huge waterfall, Fish Creek Falls. If visiting during the summer, one of my favorite weekends is Balloon Rodeo weekend where there are about 20 hot air balloons that go up in the air all at the same time. It is quite the sight to see!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have gained so many friendships throughout my photography career, and I feel inspired by so many different artists, that it is hard to narrow down who exactly has had the most impact on me. I would have to say that my first shoutout would have to be dedicated to Emily Hodges, who owns Simply Blessings Photography. Emily was one of the first ladies that really encouraged me to dive in and learn my craft. She was the one who gently pushed me out of my comfort zone so that I could grow into the artist that I am today. She is a phenomenal photographer and human being in general. Another lady that I feel deserves a shoutout would be Sarah Cornish, who owns My Four Hens Photography. She is one of the most beautiful, talented, and loving ladies out there. She and I connected on a personal level from the first time we met. I am so thankful for her believing in me and for everything she has done to uplift my spirits. I cannot go without recognizing her and her empathetic soul. Sarah is an incredible mother of 8 and has inspired me not only in my photography journey, but in my journey through motherhood and life.
